ROUNDUP
The Florida High School Athletic Association Board of Directors voted Monday to add an adapted division for students with permanent physical disabilities to the state track and field championship series.
Each of the four current classifications will be divided into the boys' division, boys' adapted division, girls' division and girls' adapted division to allow disabled athletes to participate in the wheelchair 200-meter dash, wheelchair 800-meter run and wheelchair shot put.
The new divisions will begin with the 2009-10 season.
``The Board took action today to initiate a track and field competition for disabled students, affording them the opportunity to compete on an interscholastic level and recognizing that adaptive students are part of the entire interscholastic program,'' FHSAA executive director Roger Dearing said in a press release.
BEAULIEU COMMITS
Syracuse University football coach Doug Marrone knows what it will take to build the Orange into a winner, and tapping into Florida is a great way to start.
Two weeks ago, Marrone and Syracuse came away with an unheralded prospect, Brice Hawkes. A player Davie University School coach Roger Harriott called a true ``steal.'' Now, from that same school, the Orange have struck gold with one of the premier defensive linemen in the state.
After visiting Syracuse during the weekend, 6-3, 240-pound Max Beaulieu came back with a great feeling that he found the place he wanted go. Beaulieu committed to the Orange on Monday.
``This is the perfect fit for me,'' Beaulieu said. ``A chance to play in a great conference for a coaching staff that is committed to getting back to the top in the conference was exactly what I want to be a part of.''
