Ramson Everglades' Ashleigh Johnson, Gulliver Prep's Trevor Reitz and Gulliver's Clara Smiddy won their first individual state titles at the Class 1A finals Saturday.

Johnson won the girls' 50-yard freestyle tying Bolles' Dana Nessler with an All-American automatic time of 23.46 seconds.

Johnson took an earlier lead during the race's first 25 yards but Nessler caught up to her as she neared the wall.

``Before the race I kept telling myself I was the fastest person in the pool and that really helped me,'' Johnson said.

Reitz won the boys' 100-yard butterfly event with an All American automatic time of 49.93 seconds.

Reitz was losing after the first 50 yards, but a burst of speed during the last the last 25 yards helped him beat Jacksonville Bolles' Lujuan Rivera by three-tenths of a second.

``It was a tough race but a lot of fun,'' Reitz said, after being awarded his gold medal. ``I'm really happy with my time. It was my best ever.''

The 100 fly was one of the fastest events at the Central Florida YMCA Aquatic Center with the top four finishers all qualifying for All American automatic status.

Smiddy, an eighth grader, won the girls' 200-yard individual medley with an All American automatic time of 2:03.06.

Smiddy won two silvers -- in the 200-yard freestyle relay and 100-yard freestyle.

The Raiders' boys' 200-yard freestyle relay finished third.

Ransom Everglades' Maddy Rosenthal placed third in the girls' 200-yard freestyle race, losing to Bishop Verot's Stepha Peacock.

Doral Academy junior Chinyere Pigot, who swam for Suriname in the Beijing Olympics, placed third in the girls' 50 free.

Jacksonville Bolles continued its dominance of the Class 1A state meet easily winning both the boys' and girls' team titles.

The Bolles' boys' team beat American Heritage Plantation 484-214 and the Bolles' girls' beat Pine Crest 462.5-175.

The Bulldogs set four state records and one national record on their way to a combined 13 gold, five silver and four bronze medals.
