16. GULLIVER (7-2) AT 14. A. HERITAGE (7-2)
7:30 p.m., Friday.
The playoff picture is settled.
All that's left for teams advancing is to get their stars healthy and get their game plans ready.
For the fans, there are still a few intriguing games to keep them entertained until the first round begins.
This tussle between two of the most explosive offenses in South Florida ranks near the top of the list.
Sony Michel, only in eighth grade, and the workhorse behind American Heritage's run to the District 8-2A championship, had another stellar game against Cardinal Gibbons.
Michel ran for 193 rushing yards on 33 carries and two touchdowns, bringing his season total to 1,319 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Michel will take on a Gulliver defense that stood tough against Pace last week.
The wounded Raiders, who were without star athlete Cedric Walker, didn't play like a short-handed team, ending Pace's 18-year run of making the playoffs.
Gulliver's Tacoi Sumler played a superb game, and freshmen Bo Ellis and Daryl Chestnut picked up the slack, making key runs throughout the victory.
Gulliver will face a high-powered offense similar to the one it runs behind senior quarterback Michael Strauss, and it should be a good preview to its showdown in the playoffs against North Broward Prep.
American Heritage has not lost to a South Florida team this season.
The Patriots are averaging 32.2 points per game, and have beaten small school powers such as Belen, North Broward Prep and Cardinal Gibbons.
They'd love to add Gulliver to the list right before the postseason.
Prediction: American Heritage 35, Gulliver 31.
DEERFIELD BEACH (6-3) AT BOYD ANDERSON (5-4)
7 p.m., Friday.
Deerfield Beach inaugurated its new home field in style Saturday against Douglas, wrapping up the District 9-6A championship.
Now they'll get to play there for at least the first round of the playoffs thanks to a great game by Donte' Dotson.
The senior running back/quarterback has been a huge factor in the Bucks' four victories in the past five games. Against Douglas, Dotson threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another, and returned an interception 61 yards for a touchdown.
Deerfield Beach will tune up for its playoff opponent by taking on a talented Boyd Anderson squad that likely won't play at home in the postseason.
The Cobras will have to travel to West Boca Raton in the first round.
Boyd Anderson played Miramar tough last week, but didn't muster enough offense, which has been an ongoing issue in recent weeks.
Other than a 41-point outburst against Douglas, the Cobras have scored a combined 19 points in three of its past four games.
Boyd Anderson needs to solve that problem quickly if its to have any playoff success.
Prediction: Deerfield Beach 27, Boyd Anderson 20.
CYPRESS BAY (5-4) AT 1. AQUINAS (9-0)
8 p.m., Friday.
Two of the winningest coaches in South Florida, St. Thomas Aquinas' George Smith and Cypress Bay's Mark Guandolo, are well aware of the importance of this week -- keeping players healthy.
Expect each to use their judgment wisely on how much playing time to give their stars as each prepares for the playoffs in two weeks.
St. Thomas Aquinas wrapped up District 16-5A in convincing fashion, and the Raiders should secure another victory this week against a Lightning squad that is trying to get key players back before a first-round of the playoffs showdown against Miami Carol City.
Prediction: St. Thomas Aquinas 28, Cypress Bay 7.
