Central breezes, but big games await

Despite big games in the next two weeks against Booker T. Washington in the regular season finale and Columbus in the first round of the playoffs, Miami Central had no problem staying focused on the task at hand Saturday night at Milander Stadium. And that was making quick work of Hialeah-Miami Lakes as the Rockets won easily 52-6 after blowing out to a 38-0 halftime lead. The game was played with a running clock in the second half.
Needing 224 yards to surpass Jacory Harris as the county's all-time leading passer, Central's Jeffrey Godfrey went 17 of 25 for 220 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Central offensive attack. Godfrey has thrown for 6,361 yards in his career and figures to pass Harris next week against Booker T.
Running back Brandon Gainer had 134 yards on 10 carries and one touchdown before taking the second half off. The Central defense dominated Lakes (3-6, 1-4), holding the Trojans to minus-9 yards in the first half and 42 yards for the night.
``One week at a time,'' Central coach Telly Lockette said. ``We need to continue to work hard and stay sharp.''
Miami Country Day 28, Florida Christian 25: Before Miami Country Day senior quarterback John Thompson said farewell to his teammates, he finished the 2009 season and his high school career with a game-winning touchdown against Florida Christian (3-6, 0-6 District 8-1A).
With three minutes left, Thompson put Miami Country Day (5-5, 4-4) on top 28-25 with a 14-yard pass to Kendrick Gilliam.
After the victory, Thompson gave one last speech to his team.
``I just wanted to thank them for these four great years,'' Thompson said. ``Besides family, football is the most important thing to me.''
The fourth quarter featured four lead changes. Florida Christian's Jorge Lorenzo punched in a 3-yard run to put his team up 25-20. Thompson then manufactured his last scoring drive as a Spartan. -- SERGIO BONILLA
