Another FHSAA Golf Finals, another year the American Heritage girls are aiming for a state title.

The Patriots girls' team shot a 296 in the first round of the Class 1A championship at Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club in Ocala on Tuesday to take a two-stroke lead into the final round Wednesday.

American Heritage leads St. Petersburg Northside Christian (298) in what has become a two-team title match heading into the final round. Shelby Coyle shot a 69 to lead the Patriots and all of 1A.

``The course played pretty easy,'' said Coyle, who missed her season low score by one stroke. ``The main reason I played well was because I hit greens in regulation. It's easy to make birdies that way.''

Coyle hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation and drained five birdies. Teammate Kyle Roig shot a 71 to tie for fourth overall in the individual standings, but thought she could have played better.

The Cardinal Gibbons girls' team shot a 351 to stand in ninth after Round One.

Over in the Class 2A boys tournament at Silver Springs Shores Country Club, St. Thomas Aquinas leads after the first round. The Raiders shot a 298, but are in a battle with most of the field.

There are 13 teams within nine strokes of the lead in the 2A boys field. Among those 13 teams is Cypress Bay, which shot a 305 to tie for ninth with Barron Collier.

St. Thomas leads Martin County (299) by one stroke and Lake Mary (300) by two.

The Archbishop McCarthy boys are in contention for a shot at the Class 1A crown. They fired a 292 at Juliette Falls to place second and trail Benjamin (288) by four.

In the Class 2A girls' tournament, Cypress Bay shot a 348 and sits in ninth. Lake Mary leads with a 311.
