PALMETTO 13, HOMESTEAD 10 (3 OTs)

Palmetto prevails in tough district game

Miami Herald Writer

Dylan Dunlap hit a 27-yard field goal in the third overtime to lift Palmetto past Homestead 13-10 on Thursday night at Harris Field.

Wyatt Chickillo completed 11 of 16 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown, with one interception, and Eldridge Wilcox caught a 79-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to tie the score at 7 for Palmetto.

Homestead (6-2, 2-2) had a chance to win the game, but Palmetto blocked a field-goal attempt. Palmetto (5-3, 2-2) had a chance to win, but a field-goal attempt went wide left.

Dunlop also kicked a field goal in the first overtime for Palmetto.

``This district has been playing this way all year,'' Palmetto coach Larry Coffey said. ``This week, we just got the break and persevered to get the win. We were fortunate to pull it out at the end.''

American 19, North Miami 7: Visiting American improved to 2-2 in a tight District 12-6A, tied with North Miami, and North Miami Beach is 1-2. Krop is the only team that can control its destiny with a 2-1 record, but North Miami Beach and Krop will play Friday night.

American, which was playing with a short-handed roster because of suspensions, sealed its victory with a second-half surge sparked by its running game.

American was held to 17 rushing yards in the first half, but got 167 in the second half. Rodney Madison and Kendrick Smith were the main catalysts. Madison had 68 rushing yards, including the go-ahead touchdown with less than five minutes left. Smith rushed for 66 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown plunge that gave American a 19-7 lead.

North Miami scored on a 64-yard touchdown pass from Gerardo Almendares to Ted Meline late in the second quarter.

Sunset 35, Varela 26: After four consecutive seasons of making the postseason, Sunset maintained its chances of making it five in a rowwith a victory at Tropical Park. Carlos Campos had 16 carries for 174 yards and three touchdowns and Mike Rivadeneira added 88 rushing yards to lead Sunset (4-4, 2-1 in District 15-6A).

``It was win or go home, and we all knew that, and we got the job done,'' Rivadeneira said.

Sunset is the only team in its district to make the playoffs in each of the past four seasons. Sunset needs a victory next week against Braddock, with a chance to clinch a playoff spot or remain in contention depending on the outcome of Varela's game next week against Ferguson (5-2, 3-0).

A Sunset victory and a Varela (4-4, 2-1) victory would put the three teams in a tiebreaker for the district championship and runner-up spot. A Sunset victory and Ferguson victory would give Ferguson the district title, and Sunset would qualify as the runner-up.

John Adeniyi led Varela with 92 rushing yards and three touchdowns, and quarterback Jordan Armstrong ran for 90 yards and threw a touchdown pass.

But Sunset never trailed, breaking a 7-7 tie on an 80-yard touchdown run by Campos in the second quarter.

Carol City (5-3, 4-0) has one district game remaining -- against American Heritage next Friday Goleman is 2-6 and 0-3.

``We just needed to go back and correct some little things and some things around,'' Barnwell said. ``Its like a puzzle. And I think now we're starting to see the whole picture and we're playing a lot better.''
