Braddock sweeps individual golf championships

Braddock golfers swept the individual titles at the District 23-2A championships Monday afternoon at Miami Springs Golf and Country Club.

Bulldogs senior Jaime Rodriguez won his second consecutive individual district championship when he shot a 74, tying Columbus' Christopher Lecusay. Rodriguez won the playoff hole when he shot a birdie on the 18th hole to beat Lecusay's par.

Lecusay's effort propelled Columbus to the team title with a 306. Miami Springs and Reagan advanced to regionals with a second and third finish, respectively.

On the girls' side, Braddock freshman Kristin Gonzalez won her first district championship by shooting an 88 to win by one stroke. Miami Springs' Kalyn Safreed and Ronald Reagan's Brenda Aviles each shot 89, with Safreed winning a playoff hole to clinch the runner-up spot. Her effort helped Miami Springs win the girls' team title. Ronald Reagan's Erica Steinbauer also qualified for next week's regionals as an individual.

In addition to Rodriguez, Coral Park's Armando Martir and Miami Beach's Kyle McLaughlin qualified for regionals as individuals for the boys.

Girls' team scores: 1. Miami Springs 390; Individual girls: 1. Kristin Gonzalez (BR) 88; 2. Kalyn Safreed (MS) 89; 3. Brenda Aviles (RR) 89; 4. Emilee Heider (MS) 94; 5. Erica Steinbauer (RR) 99; 6. Jeissvette Del Barro (MS) 101.

American d. St. Brendan 25-23, 20-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12: Denise Prieto 28 digs, 10 kills, and eight blocks; Ines Diaz 26 digs and five aces; Jimena Penaranda 15 assists; AM 14-3.

Palmer Trinity d. Killian 25-10, 25-22, 25-14: Kristen Titley 17 kills; Lauren Buss nine kills; Sarah Alfonso 47 assists; PT 19-2.

Late Saturday -- Volleyball For A Cure Tournament Championship -- Palmer Trinity d. North Broward Prep 25-22, 25-18: Paulina Prieto, the tournament MVP, had 16 kills. All Tournament selection Kristen Titley had seven kills and three service points. All Tournament setter Sarah Alfonso had 56 assists and four service points.

Saturday -- Mater Academy d. Chaminade 24-26, 25-20, 15-9: Krystle Garcia (MAT) five service points; Jenna Isaacs (MAT) four kills; Each made the All Tournament team.

Saturday -- Palmer Trinity d. Chaminade 25-15, 25-11: Prieto 11 kills, four blocks; Titley five kills, three aces; Alfonso 36 assists.
