FHSAA settles Title IX suit
The Florida High School Athletic Association announced Wednesday that it has reached a settlement with the Jacksonville-based group of parents that filed a Title IX discrimination lawsuit against it in June.
The group, represented by former Olympic swimmer Nancy Hogshead-Makar, filed suit after a vote by the FHSAA in April to reduce all varsity sports schedules except football and competitive cheerleading by 20 percent. The state rescinded the decision in May.
As part of the settlement, the lawsuit will be dismissed, and the FHSAA will pay $41,200 in legal fees. The FHSAA will provide Title IX training at its January meeting of the representative assembly and in its compliance seminars. The state also must notify Hogshead-Makar in writing two weeks before any proposed change to the rescinded amendment (Policy 6) regarding scheduling cuts.
``It is unfortunate that the situation occurred while trying to help our member schools with the financial crisis they are facing, which inadvertently created an unintentional disparity to our student-athletes,'' Roger Dearing, the association's executive director, said in a statement.GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL
