CHAMINADE 24, PACE 20

Big stop gives Chaminade victory against Pace

Miami Herald Writer

With four seconds left on the clock, 3 yards stood between Pace and victory. Unfortunately for the Spartans, Chaminade-Madonna also stood in the way.

The Chaminade defense came up with a big defensive stand on the final play of the game to hold on to a 24-20 win over new district foe Monsignor Pace on Friday at Chaminade Field.

The Spartans (2-2, 1-1 district 8-2B) had taken advantage of a Chaminade turnover on downs deep in their own territory and worked their way down to the Lions 5-yard line. After Chaminade (4-1, 1-0) was called for a pass interference penalty on third-and-goal, the Spartans were moved to the 3-yard line.

On the final play, Spartans senior quarterback Stephen Morris faked a handoff and tried to scramble around the outside but was met by two Chaminade defenders and stopped short of the goal line.

Stranahan 39, South Plantation 16: Quarterback Willie Tidal threw for three touchdowns, and running back Dominic St. Gerad rushed for 94 yards along with scoring three touchdowns as the Dragons defeated the host Paladins.

After a big kickoff return by running back Dominic St. Gerad to start the game, the Dragons scored first-after quarterback Willie Tindal connected with Christopher McGee for an 8-yard touchdown pass to lead 6-0. The Dragons offense continued to shine in the first half as Tindal snuck past the Paladin defense for a 1-yard run to make the lead 12-0.

After Paladin running back Bernardo Dacruz muscled his way for a 2-yard touchdown run, quarterback Johnny Marshall connected with tight end Jonathan Joseph for a 19-yard touchdown pass to make it 18-16 at Halftime.

Lakeland 46, Plantation 14: Jarred Haggins threw two touchdown passes and ran for another as Lakeland defeated visiting Plantation.

The Dreadnaughts stormed out to an 18-0 lead in the first quarter and amassed over 350 rushing yards in the game.

Lakeland (4-0) needed just two plays to take an early 6-0 lead when junior slotback Javares McRoy gained 35 yards on an option pitch and Haggins connected with Ben McRoy for a 29-yard touchdown pass on the next play.

Plantation (2-2) got on the board right before halftime when Timothy Burke returned a punt 68 yards for a score to trim Lakeland's lead to 26-6.

Haggins' second touchdown pass -- a 34-yarder to Javares McRoy gave the Dreadnaughts a 36-6 lead. Plantation answered right back when Imoni Carswell connected with Michael Anderson on a 15-yard touchdown to pull the Coloniels to 39-14. They would not get any closer.
