Central routs Miami Springs 70-24

a1fernandez@MiamiHerald.com

For the second week in a row, Central's football team lit up the scoreboard and an opponent.

And for the second week in a row, it left its opponent with bitter feelings.

The Rockets put up staggering numbers in a 70-24 rout of Miami Springs in front of 1,500 fans Thursday night at Ted Hendricks Stadium.

It was an encore performance to a 63-0 blowout of Miami Beach a week ago. Following that game, the Hi-Tides refused to shake hands with the Rockets players and coaches.

Once again Thursday, Central's opponent refused to shake hands after the game.

``It was the administration's call, and they didn't want our players to shake hands after the game,'' said Miami Springs coach Alex Pacheco, who along a couple other coaches, walked over and shook hands with Central coach Telly Lockette and his staff. ``I can't control what other teams do, but every time I get a chance to compete, I'm going to compete.''

Senior quarterback Jeffrey Godfrey led the scoring barrage by completing 13 of 16 for 332 yards and six touchdown passes. Godfrey also finished with 103 rushing yards on four carries, most of which came on an 80-yard touchdown run to begin the second quarter.

Senior running back Brandon Gainer scored a pair of rushing touchdowns, finished with 103 yards and converted four two-point conversion runs.

Central (4-0, 2-0 District 13-6A), ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 6A, scored 46 points in the second quarter to take a 62-18 halftime lead. The Rockets scored 22 of those points after recovering three short kickoffs, it later said were ``squib'' kicks.

The game had the feel of a 7-on-7 flag football game. It was such an event that fueled the Rockets' fire since Miami Springs defeated them in the Nike summer 7-on-7 tournament in Miramar this past July.

The game went to a running clock in the second half due to the state's mercy rule when a team leads by 35 points after two quarters.

Central scored one more time in the third quarter on a Godfrey touchdown pass to Jefferson Augustine that covered 62 yards. Springs answered when quarterback Rakeem Cato threw a 10-yard touchdown to wide receiver Willis Wright.

Cato, who finished with four touchdown passes, threw a 31-yarder to Tyrone Bibby on the game's first drive. Following a fumble recovery on the ensuing kickoff, Cato connected with Willis Wright for a 34-yard touchdown. Wright finished with five catches for 142 yards and three touchdowns.

Miami Springs running back Joel Romelus was injured during a run early in the second quarter and laid down on the turf for over 20 minutes. Romelus was taken by ambulance to nearby Palmetto General Hospital after having sustained a mild concussion.

Ronald Reagan 22, Braddock 17: Ronald Reagan quarterback Ivan Rosales completed eight of 10 passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns en route to a come from behind victory at Tropical Field.

Ronald Reagan (2-1) trailed by eight at halftime before Alberto Paniagua returned the second half opening kickoff 80 yards to set up the Bisons first touchdown.

Columbus 36, Miami High 0: The Columbus football team used a relentless pass rush and two long special teams touchdowns to beat district rival Miami High at Curtis Field.

The Explorers (4-0, 1-0) jumped to an early lead on the games' opening kick off after senior corner back Brian Santos returned the ball 81 yards for a touchdown.
