TEAMS OF THE WEEK

Westland Hialeah's football team didn't take long to secure its first varsity football victory. Following an opening-week shutout loss to Miami Springs, the Wildcats defeated Coral Park 16-6 despite giving up 242 rushing yards to the Rams. Senior Kevin Mujica returned the game's opening kickoff 76 yards for the school's first touchdown.

Westminster Christian girls' volleyball team: Rebecca Acevedo had 64 assists to lead the Warriors to a five-game victory against Miami Herald Preseason No. 1-ranked Palmer Trinity. Then, Julie Trembley (33 kills) and Deanna Etzold (seven kills and 10 digs in final match) each had impressive performances to lead the Warriors to victories against Winter Park, West Boca, Melbourne Holy Trinity and Boca Raton Spanish River at the Orlando Volleyball Academy Showcase this weekend.

TOP PERFORMERS

Jakhari Gore, Columbus, football: Gore ran for 229 yards on 16 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead the Explorers to a convincing 36-7 victory against Belen Jesuit. Gore broke the game open with a 56-yard score in the third quarter.

Rakeem Cato, Miami Springs, football: Cato completed 23 of 32 passes for 373 yards and four touchdowns without throwing an interception to lead the Golden Hawks to a 35-26 victory against Miami High at Curtis Park.

Duke Johnson, Norland, football: Johnson, a sophomore, ran for a career-high 204 yards and scored five touchdowns to lead the Vikings to a 34-12 victory over Edison.

Quinton Dunbar, Booker T., football: Dunbar returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, and caught two touchdown passes to lead the Tornadoes to a 35-22 victory vs. Carol City.

Danielle Aromashodu, Reagan, girls' volleyball: Aromashodu had nine kills, five aces and three blocks to lead the Bison to a victory against Southwest.

Anthony Soto, Coral Gables, boys' swimming: Soto won the 50 and 100 free to lead the Cavaliers to wins against Sunset, Braddock and Miami Beach.

Melissa and Vanessa Moreno, Doral, girls' swimming: Melissa won the 200 free and 100 fly, and Vanessa won the 200 IM and 500 free to lead the Firebirds to a win against Lourdes.

Marcelo Huarte, Columbus, boys' golf: Huarte shot an even-par 71 to capture the individual title at the Westminster Christian Invitational.

Julie Steinbauer, Carrollton, girls' golf: Steinbauer shot a 35 to lead the Cyclones to a meet victory against Ransom.

Lance Elder, South Dade, boys' bowling: Elder bowled a 690 high series against MacArthur North.

Melissa Perez, Southwest, girls' bowling: Perez bowled a 599 high series against Killian.
