Clarence ``Doc'' Noe, a former Broward County director of athletics and a member of the Florida High School Athletic Hall of Fame, died Tuesday. He was 80. Noe had been battling congestive heart failure and kidney failure the past few years.
As director of athletics and commissioner of the Broward County Athletic Association, Noe was responsible for overseeing the diverse athletic programs of more than 20 of the fastest growing senior high schools in Florida.
Noe was born in 1929 in Nabb, Ind., graduated from New Washington High in 1947 and served two years in the Air Force. In 1957, Noe taught and coached for 10 years at Fort Lauderdale Stranahan until he moved to the county office to supervise the driver education, health and physical education programs until he was named director of athletics in 1972, a position he held until 1996.
A former track coach, Noe also served as meet referee for the FHSAA state track and field championships for 30 years.
Noe is survived by his wife, Beverly, four children, and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 5, at 2 p.m. at John Knox Village in Pompano Beach.
