As the only All-Broward athlete in three sports, Cardinal Gibbons' Macy Huskey displayed plenty of poise throughout the past season while running cross-country, playing soccer or excelling in track.
However, on Wednesday morning at The Miami Herald's All-Broward Athletic Awards, Huskey's poise left her -- and she was all too happy about it.
When the accomplishments were being read for the winner of the Class 6A-4A Female Athlete of the Year, Huskey shook her head in disbelief.
''I'm hearing the winner was all-county in cross-country, track and soccer and I'm thinking that's me,'' a jubilant Huskey said. ``I was shocked. I had no idea I was going to win. I couldn't walk straight to the stage.''
Staggering to the stage in front of more than 800 people at the Signature Grand in Davie, Huskey received her large gold cup as the top female athlete in her class.
''I'm just so happy to get this kind of award, especially being only a sophomore and not having won any state titles,'' Huskey said.
Although Huskey might not have won a state title this season, she more than helped each of her teams.
In cross-country, Huskey led the Chiefs to sixth place at the Class 2A state championships.
Huskey scored 22 goals and had five assists as part of a Gibbons soccer team that was ranked No. 1 in the nation for most of the season. The Chiefs (29-1-2) finished runner-up to Ponte Vedra in the state final.
And in girls' track, Huskey ran the best time of any Broward runner in the 1,600 meters, finishing fifth at the state meet.
Of course, there were plenty of other Broward athletes who stood out during past school year.
FAMILY DAY
Among other big winners at the breakfast were Cardinal Gibbons wrestler Frank Pettineo Jr. and Cypress Bay runner Mariana Lucena, who each won two awards.
Pettineo and Lucena took home the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in their respective classes.
Pettineo also captured the Wrestler of the Year and Lucena earned the Class 6A-4A Runner of the Year.
''It's amazing to win two awards when there are so many talented athletes here,'' said Lucena, who was a state runner-up in cross-country and the 3,200 meters in track. ``I have to thank my mom, because I got my running from her.''
Like Pettineo, Lucena is headed to the University of North Carolina on an athletic scholarship. Lucena, who has a 5.1 grade-point average, plans to major in biochemistry.
Pettineo and his father, Frank, swept the wrestling awards for the second consecutive year. Frank Sr. won Wrestling Coach of the Year.
Pine Crest junior guard and National Player of the Year Brandon Knight was also a two-time winner.
Knight won the Class 3A-1A Basketball Player of the Year for the third consecutive season and also won the Class 3A-1A Male Athlete of the Year award.
Parkway's Erica Wheeler, bound for Rutgers, also won the Girls' Class 3A-1A Basketball Player of the Year and the Class 3A-1A Female Athlete of the Year.
Cooper City, coming off its first state softball championship, swept the awards in the sport.
Catcher Stormi Gryzbek won the Class 6A-5A Hitter of the Year; Corinne Clauss won the Class 6A-5A Pitcher of the Year and Phil Schmalz won the Class 6A-5A Coach of the Year. Schmalz also won Coach of the Year for Female Sports.
''It was a dream season,'' said Schmalz, who was in his first season as Cowboys coach. ``We've always been on the cusp and never been able to bring home a state title before. We just had an amazing mix of players.''
American Heritage, Class 3A state softball champions, also swept the awards in Class 4A-1A with Bailey Castro winning Hitter of the Year, Aimee Chapdelaine securing Pitcher of the Year and Marty Cooper winning Coach of the Year.
RAIDERS' RULE
St. Thomas Aquinas football coach and athletic director George Smith took home several pieces of hardware.
After leading his Raiders to a state and national championship, Smith won the Class 6A-4A Coach of the Year Award as well as Coach of the Year for Male Sports.
Smith's boys' teams won the Class 6A-4A Boys' Major Sports Award and the Class 6A-4A All-Sports Award.
The Miami Herald also recognized the 14 Broward teams that won state championships in the past year with American Heritage winning four state titles and St. Thomas Aquinas bringing home three.
