TEAM OF THE WEEK
Cody Riggs sparked the St. Thomas Aquinas boys' track team to its second consecutive Class 3A state title with victories in the 300-meter hurdles (36.60 seconds -- No. 3 in the nation) and long jump and placed second in the 110-high hurdles. Garth Jobb finished second in the shot put, and David Shepherd cleared a personal-best 14-6 to take third in the pole vault. Aquinas joined South Broward as the only Broward boys' teams to win back-to-back state titles.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Santrell Atkins, Everglades, track: The senior finished the 100 hurdles in 14.47 seconds (fourth-fastest time in Florida) to win at the Class 4A state finals.
Denard Robinson, Donte Dotson, Adrian Witty and Cassius McDowell, Deerfield Beach, track: The Bucks 400-meter boys' relay team defended its 4A state title in 40.64, the No. 2 time in the nation. Robinson also finished third in the 100.
Mariana Lucena, Cypress Bay, track: The North Carolina-bound Lucena captured her first state title by winning the 3,200 meters at the Class 4A state finals.
Ariel Read and Nikki Corn, Stranahan, flag football: Read and Corn connected on touchdown passes of 14 and 20 yards to lift the Dragons past Pompano Beach 18-13 in the state quarterfinals.
Jim Nesselt, American Heritage, baseball: Nesselt (10-0) gave up zero walks and struck out six for the reigning 3A state champions in a 1-0 regional-semifinal victory over Coral Springs Charter.
Maya Pressley, Coconut Creek, track: The Auburn-bound Pressley won the long jump in a career-best 18-6, took second in the high jump and fifth in the 300 hurdles at the Class 4A state finals.
William Rudolph, Douglas, baseball: Rudolph went 2 for 4 with four RBI, including a three-run home run in a 9-6 victory over Cypress Bay in the 6A regional semifinals.
Austin Gamble, Cypress Bay, track: The Duke football recruit won the discus, which he entered ranked No. 4 in the nation (201-5 ½), and finished third in the shot put at the 4A state finals.
Lauren Sewell, Pembroke Pines Charter, softball: Sewell (17-2) pitched a two-hitter to lead the Jaguars over Space Coast 5-0 in the Class 4A regional finals.
Eva Pierce, Sharniece Supal, Imani Sudlow, Rachael James, Boyd Anderson, track: The Cobras 1,600-meter girls' relay team defended its Class 4A state title in a time of 3:44.85.
Philimina Louis, Pierce, James, Sudlow, Boyd Anderson, track: The Cobras 3,200-meter girls' relay team won the 4A state title in a time of 9:13.60 (No. 8 in the nation).
Michael Carballo, Archbishop McCarthy, baseball: Carballo hit a two-run triple in a five-run third inning to help the Mavericks beat Pines Charter 7-5 in the Class 4A regional semifinals.
Ronnie Bees, Highlands Christian, baseball: Bees drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the bottom of the third, as the Knights beat Calvary Christian 3-1 in the Class 2A regional semifinals.
Pascal Orelus, Travis Laurent, Isaac Gafferd and Jason Cameron, Northeast, track: The boys' 1,600-meter relay team clocked 3:14.73 (No. 7 in the U.S.) to win the Class 3A state title.
Aimee Chapdelaine, American Heritage, softball: The freshman struck out 12 to pick up the victory, as the reigning Class 3A state champions beat Gulliver Prep 2-1 in the regional finals.
Corinne Clauss, Cooper City, softball: Clauss struck out six and scattered four hits in a 9-0 victory over Park Vista in the Class 6A regional finals.
