TEAMS OF THE WEEK
The Northwestern girls' track team won its fourth state title in the past five years Saturday. The Bulls finished with 98 total points, 45 points ahead of state runner-up Lauderdale Lakes Boyd Anderson. Skylar Wallen, an Ohio State University signee, broke the state record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 9.44 seconds. Briana Rollins also won the 300-meter hurdles, posting a time of 42.56 seconds.
The Jackson girls' track team, led by freshman Robin Reynolds, won its first state title since 1980. Reynolds won four total events, including the long jump, 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes. Reynolds also became only the third Miami-Dade County female athlete to win all three major dashes in the state meet.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Christian Diaz, Gulliver, baseball: Diaz pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out seven to help the Raiders advance to the Region 4-3A championship.
Michael Flores, Westminster Christian, baseball: Flores hit a walk-off single in the 10th inning to lead the Warriors past Miami Christian.
Gaby Escoto, Miami Christian, baseball: Escoto ended the season with a 29-game hitting streak.
Brittney Husk, Westminster Christian, softball: Husk, a seventh-grader, went 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored in the Region 4-2A championship game.
Yoli Cuare, Ferguson, softball: Cuare went 3 for 3 and had three RBI and scored three runs to help the Falcons advance to the Class 6A state semifinals.
Caitlin Charlton, Westminster Christian, softball: Charlton went 3 for 5 and scored three runs in the Warriors' win on Tuesday.
Shaquille Braham, Hugh Graham Jr., Michaelee Harris, Corvin Lamb, Northwestern, boys' track: The Bulls' 1,600-meter relay team posted a time of 3:13.17 to win a state title and help Northwestern finish third overall.
Armando Del Valle, Columbus, boys' track: Del Valle won the 1,600-meter state title, helping the Explorers boys' team finish as state runner-up in the 4A state track and field finals for the first time.
Kentrell Sanders, South Dade, boys' track: Sanders had a strong performance at the 4A state track and field finals, winning the triple jump and finishing second in the long jump.
Ebony Eutsey, Southridge, girls' track: Eutsey won the 200- and 400-meter dashes Saturday in the 4A state track meet.
Kyle Kennedy, Miami Springs, boys' volleyball: Kennedy finished with 20 kills and 11 digs to help the Golden Hawks win the District 13 championship.
Yandy Chirino, Coral Park, boys' volleyball: Chirino had 41 assists to help Coral Park defeat Belen 25-16, 27-25, 25-21 and win the District 14 title.
Andre Abadin, Southwest, boys' volleyball: Abadin had 32 assists to help the Eagles win the District 15 crown.
Adrian Merino, Palmetto, boys' volleyball: Merino finished with 47 assists in Palmetto's victory in the District 16 championship game.
Kevin Marrero, Hialeah-Miami Lakes, boys' volleyball: Marrero had 30 assists and 10 digs to lead the Trojans to the District 12 title.
