Boyd Anderson 6-3 guard Bryan ''Kobe'' Bynes is taking his high-wire dunk act to George Washington. Bynes made a verbal commitment to the Colonels on Thursday, two days after taking an official visit.
''I felt like it is a place I can go make a difference,'' Bynes said. ``They need a versatile guard like me. I think George Washington is great for me right now.''
Bynes, who qualified for the state track finals by winning the long jump at the Class 3-4A championships Thursday, also took visits to Old Dominion and George Mason and canceled another to UAB. Charlotte, Marshall, South Florida and Florida Atlantic were among other programs that expressed interest in Bynes.
A three-year starter, Bynes averaged a career-high 17 points, five rebounds and four assists to help the Cobras (25-3) maintain the state's top ranking in 6A for most of the season and climb to No. 14 in the ESPN Rise national poll.
While he has become a dangerous three-pointer shooter, Bynes will be remembered most for an exciting dunking style that earned him the nickname ''Kobe''. His signature play came in the Kreul Classic last December when he threw down a tomahawk dunk over Montverde Prep 7-foot center Ruslan Pateev, while being fouled.
The announcement comes a week after Bynes' teammate, Martavious Irving, committed to Kansas State. Cedric Flood-Smith and Tyrone Davis, the other half of the Cobras' dynamic four-guard lineup, have yet to choose colleges.
