The Palmetto High School boys' and girls' tennis teams swept their first-round Region 4A semifinal matchups Tuesday afternoon at Dade Kendall. Each team improved to 14-1 and reamined undefeated in the district.
The boys' team began the day by winning all five singles matches, including one by Felipe Giambarba, who defeated Columbus' Ian Olivens 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1.
''I think our scores [Tuesday] speak for our play overall and hard work throughout the season,'' Palmetto coach Kelly Gibson said. ``Our boys came out and beat a very well-coached and prepared team, but we know we'll have a tough time in the next round.''
Ben Rosenthal followed Giambarba's lead with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles against Bobby Senosiain.
Trevor Neumann, Dominic Bisceglia and Alec Bashien finished the sweep for Palmetto, which decided against playing any doubles matches.
'Both the girls' and boys' teams have worked so hard all season, and we really hit the courts with a good attitude [Tuesday] to pull off two great wins,'' Gibson said.
On the girls' side, sophomore Katherine Castro defeated highly regarded Coral Gables senior Iesha Holton 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) at No. 1 singles to extend her dominance of Miami-Dade County tennis. Agustina Cybel followed, and she did not drop a set in a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Nicole Thein.
''Katherine played a great match with very few unforced errors and showed a lot of toughness,'' Gibson said. ``She was able to be aggressive from the start and got a good lead.''
Blake Bauer gave Palmetto its third point of the match with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Maria Neito at No. 3 singles. Marissa Levine and Dylan Schlesinger followed with convincing victories at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
