Florida State, Auburn among suitors after Everglades' Blunt

Everglades is not known for producing big-time football prospects, but the Gators have three linebackers on their 2008 roster that are as good as any in South Florida.

They crew of linebackers is led by 6-2, 225-pound linebacker Roderic Blunt who is as highly recruited a player as Everglades has had in its short four-year history.

He is currently rated as the No. 24 overall player in Broward County and fifth rated linebacker.

The fifth-year program started off the 2008 season with a stunning 28-21 win against Deerfield Beach in its preseason classic, something that Blunt helped produce while leading the Gators defense.

Blunt forced a fumble in the second quarter of the game that produced a touchdown for Everglades en route to the upset.

It is plays like his second-quarter forced fumble that make him such a special player and a major reason he is being recruited by some of the best schools across the country.

Blunt says he has offers from Clemson, Wisconcin, South Carolina, Auburn and Florida State among others.

He doesn't have a favorite right now.

''I am waiting to take my visits and see what's what before making any decision,'' Blunt said.

Coach Josh Shapiro is one of Blunt's biggest supporters and says his linebacker is as good as it gets in Broward.

''I don't care what anyone says, he's the best linebacker in Broward County,'' Shapiro said. ``When you come to our school and you watch us practice, you don't have to know who he is, but when you look on the field you'd be able to pick him out without knowing who he is.''

Blunt says he would like to get out of South Florida, which might make it hard for the University of Miami to have a chance at him.

Miami coach Tommie Robinson has been in contact with him, but the Canes have not pulled the trigger on an offer. It probably won't matter though according to Blunt.

''To be honest, I want to get out of here, and I'm trying to see some other stuff,'' Blunt said.

Although he is currently playing outside linebacker, Blunt projects as an inside or middle linebacker in college because of his size and quickness in shorts spaces. His ability to take on blocks is also excellent.

But right now, Blunt is looking at a season that is filled with promise. With the Gators defeating the state's No. 1 team in Deerfield Beach, the confidence of the team is very high.

One game Blunt is looking forward to is the Miramar game.

''Since I've been here, I've never beaten Miramar,'' Blunt said. ``That's the biggest game for me.''
