Armwood will be in the mix again
There are several football programs in the state of Florida that have enjoyed success over the past decade, but perhaps none has been in the mix for a state title as much as Armwood has been over the past decade.
What coach Sean Callahan and his staff do year-round is the difference between the Fighting Hawks and most programs across the state. Much of the state championship success of this team was built on getting the job done throughout the year. This is a program that travels to offseason events and seeks top competition. That's the formula that continues to give this team an advantage.
As the 2008 season unfolds, Armwood finds itself once again at every camp in the state, looking for an edge that will help them beat standout programs such as Tampa Plant, Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer and Booker T. Washington.
Once again, the Class of 2009 will be the place that the Fighting Hawks look for experience and leadership.
On offense, speedy (4.35) quarterback Mywan Jackson (6-1, 180) is the kind of athlete who might end up on defense at the next level. Schools such as North Carolina and UCF simply love him.
Other standouts on offense include lineman Justin Cabbagestalk (6-3, 275) and Dillard Hurley (6-3, 270), running back Sir Chancey Holloway (5-8, 185) and fullback Matt Eastman, a 6-1, 220-pounder.
Defensively, standout linebacker Jamiel ''Petey'' Smith (6-1, 235) has been a big-time hitter for three years. Schools such as Auburn, Ohio St. and Tennessee are among dozens looking at his every move. Also on the defensive side of the ball is end Ryne Giddens. The 6-3, 230-pounder has programs such as Florida, Clemson and Miami on a long list.
Other players to keep an eye on include safety Angelo Hadley (6-1, 195), linebacker Casey Callahan (6-1, 215) and cornerback Mario Williams (5-10, 170).
The Class of 2010 is highlighted by running back Sherman Jessie and defensive lineman Alton Bailey.
