Miami Southridge sophomore Ebony Eutsey was named the 2007-08 Gatorade Florida Girls' Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

The award recognizes athletic excellence and academic achievement.

Eutsey capped her outstanding season with two gold-medal performances at the Class 4A state meet. Eutsey won the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.79 seconds and won the 400 in 53.85.

Eutsey also was a part of the runner-up 1,600-meter relay team, and led the Spartans to a team title.

Although she was unstoppable at the state meet, she ran her best at the Great Southwest Classic earlier in the spring. Her time of 53.23 in the 400-meter run is the fastest high school time in the nation.

Eutsey, who was nominated for the Gatorade National Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year, an award that will be announced at the end of the month, also was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Track & Field Class 4A Athlete of the Year.

• Baseball: They dominated during the season, and they are dominating after: The state-champion American Heritage baseball team placed nine players on the Florida Sports Writers Association's 3A All-State team, which was released Tuesday.

First baseman Eric Hosmer, the No. 3 overall pick in the major-league draft and The Miami Herald's Class 4A-1A Baseball Player of the Year, was a first-team selection. Joining him were pitcher Juan Carlos Sulbaran, outfielder Joey Belviso and catcher Adrian Nieto (listed at designated hitter).

Ryan Kahn (P, second team), Austin Yager (OF, third), Deven Marrero (DH, third), Eric Acevedo (IF, honorable mention) and Brandon Sedell (IF, honorable mention) also were selected.

Florida Christian catcher David Villasuso and Miami Gulliver Prep infielder Daniel Canela also earned 3A first-team honors. Florida Christian outfielder Leo Carrillo was named to the second team, Pompano Beach pitcher Ryan Arnold was named to the third-team and Chaminade Madonna pitcher Joe Hone, Coral Springs Charter pitcher Dylan Wolchik and LaSalle infielder Anthony Tzamtzis were honorable mention.

In 4A, Monsignor Pace pitcher Mark Alfonso and Mater Academy infielder Luis Lumpuy were first-team selections. Belen Jesuit Prep's Lucas Calderon (IF, second), Cardinal Gibbons' Gabby Lima (IF, second), Pembroke Pines Charter's Anthony Bondarenko (OF, second), Pace's Carlos Hechevarria (P, third), Archbishop McCarthy's Chad Cabrera (OF, third), Cardinal Gibbons' Eric Whaley (P, honorable mention) and Archbishop McCarthy's Chris Turino (IF, honorable mention) also were honored.

The 5A and 6A teams will be announced Wednesday.
