Southridge's girls, boys claim titles

The Southridge girls' track-and-field team didn't want to share.

Facing a potential tie with longtime rival Northwestern going into the final event of Wednesday's Region 4-4A championships, the Spartans won the 1,600-meter relay to secure the outright team title 168-164 at Traz Powell Stadium.

Southridge swept the meet as the boys' won the team title too by defeating runner-up Carol City 121-93.

The Spartans' girls took a two-point lead into the relay, an event in which the Bulls have the fastest time in the state.

Northwestern jumped ahead after the first leg of the relay, but Southridge sophomore Ebony Eutsey took a commanding lead in the second leg.

''I knew we could win this,'' Eutsey said. ``I had to sprint the entire leg and not slow down at all.''

The final leg came down to a close race between Northwestern's Brianna Streeter and Southridge's Kaneesha Knowles. Streeter passed Knowles near the halfway point.

Knowles, however, overtook her and held on to help the Spartans win the event in 3 minutes, 46.89 seconds to clinch the team title.

Knowles was filling in for sophomore Marcia Williams, who regularly ran the relay, but is out because of an Achilles' tendon injury.

''We had to bring home the trophy and do it for Marcia,'' Knowles said. ``Ebony told me to pace myself and wait until the end to run the fastest.''

Eutsey won the 200 and 400, and Monique Gracia improved on her state-best time in the 100 hurdles, winning in 13.92 seconds.

Northwestern again was led by Skyler Wallen's convincing victories in the 800 and 1,600 meters and a victory in the 3,200-meter relay, which they have dominated the entire season.

But the Bulls had a costly outcome in the 300 hurdles, when Brianna Rollins pulled a muscle near the end of the race, and she and Sandy Jean could not qualify to next week's state championship.

On the boys' side, senior Brandon O'Connor ran what is believed to be the second-fastest time in the nation in the 200 meters, winning in 20.86 seconds.

The owner of the top time this season?

O'Connor in 20.63.

O'Connor, a Florida State University signee, also won the 400 meters, which he also owns the nation's best time, and the triple jump.

Olarenwajuk Adeyemi sustained a rare defeat in the 300 hurdles, but didn't mind because it was to teammate Ras-len Bully by a hundredth of a second.

Adeyemi won the 110 hurdles om 13.90 seconds -- the fastest time in the state this season.

South Dade's Howard Heyliger (long jump), Coral Gables' Samantha Montero (pole vault), Northwestern's Naquia Williams (long jump), Homestead's Tyler Hodges (triple jump), Central's Tiffany Williams (100), Carol City's Robert Lanier (800), and the Northwestern 400 relay team all posted personal-best and Dade-best marks at the meet.
