Even though its top returning pitcher was injured and its lineup was mostly underclassmen, the Palmetto baseball team is starting to make a push toward returning to the state final four.
Led by junior pitcher Casey Delgado's three-hitter, the Panthers earned a crucial, 5-3 district victory against Killian on Thursday night at Mark Light Field.
Palmetto (12-3) moved into a first-place tie with Southridge at the top of District 16-6A heading into next week's spring break and extended its winning streak to six games.
The result ended an eight-game winning streak for the Cougars (11-4).
The Panthers, who have only two seniors in the lineup, saw its top seven batters in the lineup finish with at least one hit. Junior Luis Montesinos, junior Hunter DeCamp and senior Joe Keebler had two hits apiece.
Montesinos drove in a pair of runs, including an insurance run on an infield single in the bottom of the sixth inning. Montesinos opened the scoring in the first with an RBI double. Palmetto stretched its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third on a doubles by Max Halasz and Keebler and a single by DeCamp.
