Gulliver Prep raided the home of the Eagles and left with the victory Friday night, beating North Broward Prep 40-35.
It was the first playoff victory on the road in Gulliver Prep history.
''Ya'll did it,'' Gulliver coach Earl Sims told his players in the huddle after the game. ``Way to hang in there.''
Three rushing touchdowns and three passing touchdowns won it for Gulliver, despite losing two players to injuries in the fourth quarter. Artice Kellam injured his neck ,and Tacoi Sumler injured his back. Both players were taken to North Broward Medical Center. The initial was prognosis was good, according to Sims.
North Broward Prep took the lead in the fourth quarter after Anthony Guerra intercepted a pass by Michael Strauss. The Eagles got the ball on the Raider's 16-yard line and drove down the field, ending with a 7-yard touchdown run by Daniel Paponetti that put the Eagles up 35-34 with 5:25 left to play.
But Gulliver came back when Michael Strauss found Conner Vernon for a 55-yard touchdown pass.
Darian Mallary rushed for 132 yards and scored three touchdowns for Gulliver.
''He's a tough guy. He's got over 1,100 yards rushing,'' Sims said.
Strauss passed for 256 yards and three touchdowns. Daniel Rodriquez caught the other two TD passes, a 12-yarder and a 28-yarder.
North Broward quarterback Brandon Doughty rushed for two touchdowns and passed for one, a 27-yard reception by Nick Alfano. Doughty threw for 239 yards and completed 20 of 31 passes.
''We got the short end of the stick. It's been a heck of game,'' Doughty said. ``We bounced back pretty good in the second half. We hadn't been down at the end yet this year.''
The work continues for Gulliver Prep next week at Archbishop Carroll, which beat American Heritage in their playoff game Friday night.
''We've got to bandage ourselves up and not lick our wounds too much,'' Sims said. ``It's a blessing to be here.''
Glades Central 25, Belen 6: The Raiders opened the playoffs with a relatively easy Friday night.
But they hardly resembled the top-ranked team they have been in Class 3A throughout the season.
Playing without inured starting quarterback L.J. Thomas, who is out with a broken collarbone, the Raiders (11-0) committed four turnovers, three on interceptions by Thomas's replacement Alanda Shaw.
The Wolverines held Glades Central, known for their offensive firepower, to 190 yards of total offense.
''Shaw and our offense were completely out of sync,'' Raiders coach Jessie Hester said. ``We were also missing some offensive linemen, which created a lot of chaos.''
Despite their offensive woes, the Raiders relied heavily on a dominating defense that created five turnovers of their own -- two on interceptions by defensive back Cartavious Baldwin.
''Our defense was really spectacular and carried us,'' Hester said.
