Country Day's Watson wins 400th
Miami Country Day boys' soccer coach Jeff Watson celebrated his 400th career victory Friday with a 6-1 win against Miami Christian.
Tyrone Serrao led the Spartans (4-0-1) in the win scoring three goals.
Jacky Sasson added a goal and two assists, and Axel Halvorssen had a goal and an assist.
Watson has coached in Miami for 28 years, and the past 14 at Miami Country Day.
Watson, a native of South Carolina, moved to South Florida in 1981 and took the head coaching job at Archbishop Curley.
In his four years at Curley, Watson took the Knights twice to the state tournament, losing once in the state semifinal and once in the state final.
One of Watson's fondest memories as a coach was when he won 1989 FHSAA Class 4A state championship with Sunset High School.
''Winning the state championship was by far one of my greatest memories,'' said Watson, who coached Sunset for 10 years. ``It was the way they played. We scored five goals a game and shut teams down. People would say that it got boring to watch because they knew we were going to win.''
After Sunset, Watson jumped from West Miami-Dade County to the village of Miami Shores to coach Miami Country Day.
In his first season as the head coach, Watson was one game from the state tournament but lost in the regional final.
Recently, Watson has been able to enjoy another great feat in his career, when he got the opportunity to coach his children.
''It's special being able to coach my kids and be successful,'' Watson said.
