Canes get two top-10 finishes

The University of Miami women's cross-country team finished sixth and the men's team finished 10th at the Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic in Orlando on Saturday.

Sophomore Anna Bona ran the top time for the UM women's team, finishing in 19 minutes, 57.0 seconds, good enough for 24th place. Kennesaw State won the team title, and the Owls' Mackenzie Howe won the individual title in 18:07.60.

``The women did well through the first mile, but gave up some position into mile two,'' UM assistant coach Damon Griffiths said. ``We have to work on closing our races. However, they have showed improvement in different aspects in each race this season.''

Palmetto survives despite adversity

The Palmetto girls' bowling team didn't expect to still be playing on Wednesday at the Florida state championships.

With one bowler unable to use one side of her upper body, another bowler playing through a back injury that will require surgery in the offseason and no substitutes, the Panthers were happy to be around at all.

But Palmetto ended up highlighting a solid first day for Dade teams by making it through qualifying as the No. 10 team and then beating No. 7 Centennial 3-1 in a best of five match in the first round of the championship bracket.

Palmetto boys' and girls' tennis teams earn sweep at regional semifinals

The Palmetto High School boys' and girls' tennis teams swept their first-round Region 4A semifinal matchups Tuesday afternoon at Dade Kendall. Each team improved to 14-1 and reamined undefeated in the district.

The boys' team began the day by winning all five singles matches, including one by Felipe Giambarba, who defeated Columbus' Ian Olivens 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1.

''I think our scores [Tuesday] speak for our play overall and hard work throughout the season,'' Palmetto coach Kelly Gibson said. ``Our boys came out and beat a very well-coached and prepared team, but we know we'll have a tough time in the next round.''

Cooper City gets over hump, finally defeats Cypress Bay in boys' tennis

For almost a decade, the Cypress Bay boys' tennis team has tormented its Cooper City counterpart.

Every time the two sides have faced each other in the playoffs in the recent past, the Lightning has prevailed -- including in the 2008 district tournament, which catapulted Cypress Bay to the 4A state title.

But if ever there was a year to snap the skid, this was it. The Lightning lost its top four players to graduation. And Cypress Bay's top returning player, Carl Eguez, had to transfer to Cooper City because of redistricting.
