jazpiazu@MiamiHerald.com

The Belen cross-country team has been on a roll lately winning three meets in a row.

Friday afternoon the Wolverines added another win to their record after they took the top-three spots at the Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition High School Cross-Country Invitational at Larry and Penny Memorial Park.

''They've started to developing some confidence in themselves -- they're working hard,'' said Wolverines coach Frankie Ruiz. ``We're taking it one meet and one practice at a time with the end goal in mind.''

Belen's top two runners freshman Elliot Clemente and senior Joseph Dorfman finished first and second, respectively. Senior Lawrence Duran finished third. The Wolverines had seven runners finish in the top 15 places.

''I did good today -- started off like normal a little slower than the rest of the people. I started catching up at the mile [mark] and started passing people,'' Clemente said.

Westminster Christian's Nicole Carpio, fresh off a fourth place finish at the Flrunners.com Invitational last weekend, won the girls' race.

Carpio, a freshman, said after the race she was a little disappointed with her time of 18:53 but was happy to be able to win.

''Today didn't go too well. My time wasn't great it was really hot,'' Carpio said. ``This year has been going really for me I haven't gotten injured.''

Lourdes won the girls' team division, finishing with 23 points. Gulliver was second with 114.

Sophomore Alessandra Valdivia was the Bobcats highest finisher placing third behind Gulliver's Carrie Davis.

FOOTBALL

• Coral Springs 23, Taravella 21: Carlos Romero nailed a 46-yard field goal in the final seconds of the game to lift host Coral Springs to the victory over crosstown rival Taravella in a District 9-6A matchup.

''I'm really excited and happy right now, it's unbelievable,'' Romero said. ``Before the kick I was praying for the opportunity and it was given to me. It was a really big game and it feels great to get the win.''

Trailing 21-20 with under a minute left, Coral Springs (4-1, 1-0) went deep into its playbook and used trick plays to produce the game-winning drive.

John Chiari took a lateral from quarterback Steven Garitty and found Junior Paige down field for 32 yards. After a penalty pushed the Colts back five yards, Garitty took a lateral pass and connected with Chiari on a 23-yard catch to the 30-yard line. That set up Romero's kick.
