Sunset offense surges in second half against South Dade

BY MELISSA ARTEAGAMiami Herald Writer

For the first two quarters, Sunset's defense carried the load against South Dade on Friday.

But in the second half, Sunset's offense rose to occasion, accounting for two touchdowns and a field goal in a 16-3 victory.

''This was a total team effort,'' junior linebacker Nicholas Mule said. ``We gave our offense the ball with great field possession in the second half and they made things happen. This should show the other teams in our district that we are still the team to beat.''

Sunset's defense, which is led by Mule, Marcus Lamons and Fabrice Pratt, maintained constant pressure on South Dade quarterback Jason Webb. They combined for six sacks, including two in the first half.

''I cant say enough about my defense and they way they have played all season long,'' Sunset coach Jayson Malkin said. ``They allowed the offense to work out the kinks from early on and get going.''

Receiver Peter Galiardi caught a 6-yard pass from Steven Fonticella to continuity established on offense for Sunset (3-1). Moments later, early in the fourth quarter, Dustin Goffan hit a 22-yard field goal.

Sunset got an insurance touchdown when junior Carlos Campos scored on a 17-yard run. Campos finished with 72 rushing yards to lead the team.

''This is a great win for us,'' Malkin said. ``We beat a good team and our kids are pumped about it.''

• Doral 14, Westlake 13: Carlton Callender returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown to give host Doral a 7-0 lead. Derek Montes responded with 35-yard interception for a touchdown that tied the score at 7 in the first quarter.

Doral was leading 14-7 in the fourth quarter and had fourth-and-goal at the 1. But Westlake forced a fumble and scored on a 52-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-13. But a penalty on the extra-point attempt resulted in poor field position, and the kick was blocked with two minutes left.

''We were better this week, but we still looked bad. The coaches, the players, we all look bad.'' Doral coach Evan Cooper said. ``But one thing we showed was a lot of fight and we didn't give up.''
