PALMETTO 24, SOUTH MIAMI 0

Karpiak (3 TDs) powers Palmetto to victory

Miami Herald Writer

Palmetto's defense forced five turnovers and quarterback Kevin Karpiak threw for 120 yards and three touchdowns as Palmetto cruised past South Miami 24-0 at Harris Field on Friday.

Following a scoreless first half that featured great defense from both squads, Palmetto tallied 17 points in a span of six minutes to conclude the third quarter. South Miami fumbled on the very first play of a drive on two consecutive possessions, and the Panthers (3-1, 2-0 District 16-6A) were able to capitalize on the field position.

''We tried to install a new system on offense in the first half and just didn't execute well,'' coach Larry Coffey said. ``In the second half, we went back to our base stuff and our defense forced some key turnovers to put us in a position to win.''

Running back Jaamal Berry ran for 71 yards on 12 carries and turned a screen pass into a 53-yard touchdown scamper. Berry also had a 36-yard touchdown run called back because of a holding penalty.

Defensive back Randall Evans, who transferred to Palmetto from South Miami, recorded two interceptions for a Panthers defense that yielded only 167 all-purpose yards.
