Even a thunderstorm couldn't prevent Palmetto from sweeping the Greater Miami Athletic Conference golf championships Thursday afternoon at the Redland Golf and Country Club.
Palmetto senior Melissa Koniver, who managed to finish her round of 18 before the rains came, edged Miami Springs' Kalyn Safreed by one stroke for the individual title after the severe weather forced GMAC officials to score the meet based on the first nine holes played.
Palmetto junior Casey Matthews won the boys' individual title by shooting a 1-under par 71, winning his first GMAC title. The Panthers' boys shot 297 as a team to beat rival Columbus by four strokes. Columbus' Marcelo Huarte shot a 72 to finish second.
It had been a while since the Palmetto girls' golf team could share in the celebration of winning a major tournament with their boys' counterparts. The Panthers won their first girls' GMAC crown since 2005, edging Coral Reef by five strokes. The Barracudas had won it the past two seasons.
Koniver is the lone senior and returning golfer for the Panthers.
''I was nervous because the holes that were scored didn't even include the birdie I shot on the final nine,'' Koniver said. ``The team is doing pretty good, considering we have a lot of new players this year.''
Palmetto's boys won their fifth consecutive GMAC title. In addition to Matthews, Ernesto Marin and James Tria also finished in the top five.
Palmetto avenged a loss to Columbus last week in a tri-meet at the Biltmore Golf Course. The two longtime golf rivals will meet again in Tuesday's Youth Fair Invitational before the Panthers travel to the Martin County Invitational in Stuart next weekend.
''I left a lot of shots out there last week,'' Matthews said. ``I think we all rose to the challenge this time.''
