Booker T. Washington's five-year winning streak against Dade County opponents survived another week.
The Tornadoes overcame a 25-point deficit to defeat Miami Central 44-39 on Friday night at Traz Powell Stadium.
Booker T. Washington (1-1) has not lost to a Dade County team since 2003.
Tornadoes quarterback Torrance Moise, who made his first start Friday since sustaining a high ankle sprain the preseason, said he told his teammates they weren't going to lose again this season.
''I told them, even though we lost that first game up in Georgia, we can win a state title,'' Moise said. ``Even though we got down early, I kept telling them, `We're going to win this gam. Keep your heads up.
' `Get behind me, and let's roll.' ''
The Rockets (0-2) looked unstoppable early as junior quarterback Jeffrey Godfrey threw three touchdown passes in the first quarter; building a 19-0 first-quarter lead. Godfrey continued his brilliant play, accounting for 387 total yards of offense (247 passing and 140 rushing).
Booker T. Washington scored its first points of the night early in the second quarter when Moise darted through the middle of the Central defense for a 10-yard touchdown run.
Moise carried the Tornadoes offense, as he accounted for five touchdowns (three passing and two rushing) and 272 yards passing.
Trailing 25-7 late in the second quarter, the Tornadoes received a major boost from their special teams as senior Ricky Delancy scooped up a mishandled kickoff and dashed down the middle of the field for an 83-yard touchdown, cutting the Rockets' lead to 25-14 going into halftime.
The Tornadoes came out after halftime and cut into the deficit again when Moise found a wide open Andre Edwards streaking across the middle of the field and connected with him on a 44-yard touchdown pass.
Central looked as though it had regained control when Godfrey took a quarterback draw 63 yards down the sideline for a touchdown to give the Rockets a 31-21 lead.
Booker T. Washington was able to put a drive together that put it on the Central 1-yard line. But the Rockets defense made a big defensive stand and forced the Tornadoes to turn the ball over on downs.
The Tornadoes defense made a big play of its own on the next play, as defensive end Lynden Trail sacked Godfrey in the end zone for a safety to make the score 31-23.
Booker T. then scored three consecutive touchdowns to take a 44-31 lead late.
