After playing a big part in Norland's fifteen-point lead, injured quarterback Jerrad Randall had to helplessly watch his team stagger against an American High second-half rally.
But the Vikings, ranked No. 6 in the Class 6A poll, managed to escape with a 15-13 victory, thanks to a blocked 23-yard, field-goal attempt courtesy of linebacker Gyovanni Harvey with 34 seconds remaining.
''I was worried about the way they moved on us,'' Harvey said. ``With our quarterback hurt, we were forced to fight harder on defense and special teams.''
Randall left the game late in the second quarter, injuring his shoulder after getting sacked. His status is day-to-day.
At that point of the game, he had thrown for 153 yards on 5-for-10 passing, including touchdown passes of 81 and 39 yards to Xavier Rhodes and Christopher Scarlett, respectively.
His second TD pass of the game followed by a successful two-point conversion gave the Vikings (2-0) their two-touchdown lead midway through the second quarter.
The Patriots (0-2), held to just 23 yards in the first half, caught a break when Vikings backup Andre Jackson fumbled the snap at the Norland 12.
DJ Frye made the recovery to give American possession with 1:45 left in the half.
Three plays later, American caught another break when Abe Coleman's erratic pass in the end zone was deflected by Norland defenders and into the hands of receiver Caylin McBeth for the fluke 13-yard score. Mario Romero's extra point cut Norland's lead to 15-7 at the half.
American dominated the second half, scoring on a Delman Lumpkin 1-yard run with 10 minutes remaining before falling short on the failed field-goal attempt on the next possession.
Lumpkin led all rushers with 96 yards on 17 carries.
North Miami 28, Miami Beach 12: Nexon Dorvillus and Malcolm Simpson accounted for 215 of the 289 rushing yards gained by North Miami for a well-fought victory at Flamingo Park, home of Miami Beach.
Miami Beach was outgained 194-12 in total yardage in the first half, but a 95-yard interception return for a touchdown by senior Donnie Gaitor kept the Tide within eight points going into halftime.
With the Tide driving late in the third quarter down by eight, junior quarterback Keon Kersaint suffered a sprained ankle and did not return to the game.
On the ensuing drive, the Pionners scored the go-ahead run that kept the game out of reach, making it 28-12.
''We like to take things one step at a time,'' said coach Horane Allison.
``Right now, we are thinking about our district opponents North Miami Beach, that is the next step.''

Archbishop Carroll 41, Academy 0: Coming off a disappointing loss in the first week of the season to Jacksonville Bolles, host Archbishop Carroll beat Academy in front of a large crowd. The Bulldogs (1-1) dominated on both sides of the ball and led the Eagles 21-0 at halftime.
''I'm real proud of the way the guys stayed focused, and we were able to put them away,'' said Carroll coach Jorge Zagales.
``We came out and were executing -- I was real happy with the way they played.''
Quarterback Chanz Mack and running back Jeff Scott led the Bulldogs' offense. Mack was near perfect, going 5 for 6 for 163 yards and two touchdown passes.
Corey Ammons, who orally committed to the University of Central Florida, left the game in the third quarter with a sprained ankle. But Zagales said the injury was not major.
