The North Miami Beach football team defeated Jackson 48-12 on Friday night in front of a large crowd at Curtis Field.

''We came out and played pretty well,'' said Chargers coach Jeff Bertani. ``Every week in Dade County you're going to play a better team, and every week we have a bigger challenge.''

North Miami Beach's offense was led by quarterback Nico Flores. Flores got the Chargers on the board first with a 34-yard pass to Christopher Lloyd.

North Miami Beach's next touchdown came on an interception return by Kemal Ishmael.

The Chargers ended the first half leading the Generals 34-6.

Running back Markeith Russell led the Chargers' ground attack, finishing with 14 carries 93 yards and two touchdowns.

On Thursday, North Miami Beach will take on Killian and Jackson will play Edison on Friday.

• Deerfield Beach 43, Hollywood Hills 7: With the unexpected death of former Deerfield Beach receiver Jerome Philpart weighing on their minds, the Bucks turned in an inspired effort to beat Hollywood Hills 43-7.

Running back Cassius McDowell led the Bucks with 199 rushing yards on nine carries, including scores of 41, 53 and 83 yards. All of McDowell's yards came in the first half as the Bucks took a commanding 43-0 lead.

According to Bucks assistant coach Damien Hunt, Philpart, 22, suffered a blocked clot in his lung and passed away last Wednesday.

Bucks coach Art Taylor said the game was dedicated to Philpart's family, especially his grandmother.

''I want to let it be known that this game was for Mrs. Flo Philpart,'' Taylor said. 'I told the boys they are blessed to play this game, and not to take it for granted. That was on the boys' minds all week.''

Host Hollywood Hills proved no match for the No. 1-ranked Bucks (Class 6A), who proved scored on their first six possessions.

Brian Powell made the most of his touches, scoring on runs of 19 and 47 yards. He finished with 59 yards on four carries.

• Glades Day 28, Chaminade 3: Mistakes and inexperience contributed to host Chaminade's loss to Glades Day.

''We are very young and we are going to get better,'' said first-year coach Ken Tyrrell. ``We plan on being a good team by the end of the season.''

With 7:30 left in the first quarter, Glades recovered a high snap from center at the Chaminade 31-yard line. Two plays later, Gator quarterback Bo Schlecter threw 12 yards to Alex Mann for the score.

Later in the first quarter, Chaminade capitalized on a fumble recovery at the Glades' 38-yard line, setting up Patrick Gay's 46-yard field goal. Glades extended the lead just before halftime on Kevin Taylor's 3-yard TD run.

Taylor put the game out of reach with two fourth-quarter touchdowns on runs of 11 and 34 yards.

''We only have 10 seniors and it's going to be a growing process for us,'' Tyrrell said.
