Tryouts for the USA Baseball Under-16 national team are being held in Miami this week, with the final roster to be announced at 10:45 p.m. Friday. Play is being held on the campuses of the University of Miami and FIU.
The invitees include South Florida players Nick Castellanos (Archbishop McCarthy), Andres Perez-Lobo (Columbus) and Bryan Radziewski (Florida Christian). The group, split into ''white'' and ''blue'' teams, is playing a series of scrimmages, along with drills and exercises, to pare the field to 18 from 36 players.
''This is the best of the best,'' Castellanos said after the first day of competition. ``This is the best competition I've seen.''
Jeff Singer, an event organizer, added that about ''95 percent'' of the players would ``play professionally on some level.''
From Miami, the team will go to Mexico City to compete in the Junior Pan-American games against the best teams in South America and the Caribbean, an experience familiar to some of the South Florida hopefuls.
''My family is from Cuba,'' Castellanos said. ``It would be an honor to go over there and beat them.''
Games will be held Thursday, with first pitch at 11:35 a.m., and Friday at 6:05 p.m., both at FIU's baseball field.
