Roque among 22 named to all-state list

The Florida Sports Writers Association released its Class 1A and Class 2A all-state baseball teams Monday.

The teams featured 22 players from South Florida, including Miami Christian pitcher Felix Roque (2A). On Monday, Roque returned from Minneapolis, where he competed in the Perfect Game National Showcase, held in the Metrodome before scores of scouts and major-league general managers.

Roque showed off the 90-mph velocity that has made him a potential first-round pick in the major-league draft, according to one league executive.

Joining Roque on the 2A first team were pitcher T.J. Thornton and infielder Derek Niesman, both from American Heritage (Delray Beach). Thornton (.431) and Niesman (.395) led the Patriots to a district playoff berth in 2008.

In all, 12 players from Miami-Dade and Broward counties were on the first, second, third and honorable-mention teams.

The 1A list included familiar names as well. Seven players from Dade and Broward were from Brito Academy, headlined by Miami Herald All-Dade pitcher David Vidal.
