Gulliver Prep's Clara Smiddy won the 200-individual medley and the 100-freestyle at the Region 4-A championship meet on Thursday at Nova Southeastern University.

Smiddy, in eighth grade, was the only swimmer from Miami-Dade County to win two events. Ransom Everglades Ashleigh Johnson finished first in the 50 freestyle with an All-American Automatic team of 23.48 seconds.

``I've been working really hard to get my times lower,'' Johnson said.

Pace's Emily Ramirez took first in the 100 butterfly and finished second in the 200 individual medley.

On the boys' side, Gulliver Prep finished third in the team standings, losing to Pine Crest.FOOTBALL

Carol City 14, American 0: Clad in their throwback uniforms Carol City won its fifth straight game, defeating American at Traz Powell. The Chiefs (6-3, 5-0 District 12-6A) also eliminated the Patriots (3-6, 2-3) from playoff contention.

Devonte Mathis threw a 4-yard touchdown strike to Ranell Hall to give the Chiefs a 7-0 lead in the third quarter. Mathis also scored one a one-yard run in the fourt. Freshman Bramond Snell led Carol City with 58 yards rushing.

North Miami Beach 38, Goleman 8: With a quark in the schedule that had their bye week being the final week, North Miami Beach closed out its 2009 season a week before everyone else on Thursday night and finished on a positive note with a rout of Goleman at Milander Stadium.

The win ended a string of five consecutive losses for NMB but was no consolation for coach Jeff Bertani and the Chargers, who finished 4-6 and 2-3 in the district and will miss the postseason for the first time since 2004 and only the second time in the last 10 years. Goleman fell to 3-6, 0-5.

Chaminade-Madonna 42, Doral Academy 0: Chaminade-Madonna (9-0, 7-0) stayed perfect with 42-0 at Doral Academy (1-7, 1-6). The Lions jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter as junior quarterback Jerrard Randall turned a third down and short quarterback sneak into a 61-yard touchdown run.

Southridge 31, Coral Reef 14: Christian Goods rushed for 184 yards and all four of Southridge's touchdowns, carrying his sluggish team over Coral Reef at Harris Field.

Coral Reef (3-6, 0-5 in District 16-6A) gained just 58 yards from scrimmage in the first half. But 62 penalty yards, two muffed punts and several missed opportunities by Southridge (8-0, 5-0) kept the Barracudas in the game, which was tied at 7 at halftime.
