OCALA -- It wasn't the type of finish teams from Miami-Dade were expecting on Wednesday in the final round of the FHSAA Golf Finals.
Columbus and Palmetto were in contention for the Class 2A championship at the start of the day, but both teams could not keep up with eventual champion Lake Mary.
The Explorers began the day in fifth place just five strokes off Tuesday's leader, St. Thomas Aquinas.
However, Columbus had a tough back nine at Silver Springs Shores and fell to 13th.
Columbus combined to shoot a 316 for a 619 total in the two-day event. Lake Mary rallied from two strokes down to St. Thomas and fired a 283 for a 583 total to win the 2A championship.
The Explorers got off to a good start Wednesday, but the final nine holes and more specifically the first hole of the back nine did them in.
``The back side got us,'' Columbus coach Charles Frazier said. ``Those were some of the harder holes on the course.''
Palmetto, which was in 13th, but just nine strokes off the lead after Tuesday, shot a 319 on Wednesday to drop to 15th overall.
The Gulliver boys finished 10th in the Class 1A championship. Benjamin won the 1A title with a 580.
The only girls' teams from Miami-Dade were Miami Springs and Palmetto in Class 2A.
Both squads were unable move up from their 15th and 16th place after Wednesday's round. Lake Mary captured the girls 2A crown with a 625.
The Palmetto girls improved by 14 strokes with a 411 on Wednesday.
