Luchi Gonzalez to coach soccer at Gulliver Prep

From Miami Herald Staff Reports

• Coaching changes: A couple of Miami-Dade County's top boys' soccer teams will have new coaches next season.

Luchi Gonzalez, who led Varela to a state and national championship in 2008, has accepted the coaching position at his alma mater, Gulliver Prep.

Following Gonzalez's departure, Columbus has since hired assistant Mario Concha, Jr. as its new coach. Concha Jr., played for Miami Killian and St. Thomas University.

He also coached with Gonzalez at Varela prior to last season. Concha will be assisted by his father, Mario Sr., who played 15 years of professional soccer in the United States, Bolivia and Argentina.

Also hired by Gulliver: Everton Edwards, a former women's soccer coach at FIU, will coach the girls' soccer team; Kathryn Essig will be the new girls' volleyball coach, and former girls' coach Suzanne Parker will remain the boys' volleyball coach; James Sweeney, a former coach at the University of Miami and swimmer at Indiana University, will coach the swimming teams.

• Swimming: Belen Jesuit's Carlos Omana and Miami Ferguson's Ana Anaya have qualified for the Conoco Phillips U.S. Nationals meet July 7-10 in Indianapolis.

Omana, a state champion in the 200 individual medley, helped Belen win a third consecutive state championship this past season.

• Signings: Columbus distance runner Chris Ackemjack signed with St. Thomas University, and he will compete in track and cross-country for the Bobcats. Ackemjack was part of the Explorers' first team All-Dade, 3,200-meter relay team this season.

Pompano Beach Blanche Ely boys' soccer standout Andy Contreras has signed to play at Middle Georgia College.
