University of Miami football fans were glued to their radios Saturday morning to find out if Plantation American Heritage offensive lineman Jared Wheeler was going to help a major recruiting need.
pounder chose the Canes over Vanderbilt, becoming the 20th oral commitment in Randy Shannon's 2009 signing class.
Wheeler, a Rivals.com three-star recruit and the seventh-best recruit in Broward according to The Miami Herald, said it was a family decision. Last Sunday, his mother, Kathy, gave birth to the family's 10th child. Right before Kathy gave birth, her son called her to say he was staying home.
''With the new baby, John, being born, I wanted to be there while he was growing up,'' Wheeler said. ``Family comes first for me.''
