Ely's Carter picks W. Va.

alfernandez@MiamiHerald.com

A Blanche Ely defensive back declared his college intentions on national television for the second consecutive year.

Michael Carter gave an oral commitment to West Virginia on Saturday during NBC's broadcast of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio. Last year, former teammate Patrick (Johnson) Peterson committed to LSU on national television.

Carter became the third Broward County prospect to commit to the Mountaineers, joining Eugene Smith (Miramar) and Stedman Bailey (Miramar). Miami Northwestern running back Daquan Hargrett also has committed to the Mountaineers.

Carter, a 5-11, 160-pound defensive back, said he chose West Virginia over Miami, Florida, Minnesota and Georgia. Carter had two interceptions for a defense that allowed an average of just 72 passing yards this season.

Carter joined a number of Floridians on the East All-Star team that won 30-17 behind two touchdowns by running back Bryce Brown, a UM commitment.

Brown, from Wichita, Kan., caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from Tajh Boyd. Brown scored again when Boyd found him behind the West defense for a 41-yard touchdown that gave the East a 30-10 lead with 6:16 remaining.

Two of UM's top linemen targets chose other schools.

Defensive tackle William Campbell (6-5, 317 pounds), a Detroit native, had UM among his short list of potential schools, but committed to Michigan during the game. Campbell is rated the No. 4 defensive tackle in the country, according to Rivals.com.

Offensive tackle Xavier Nixon of Fayetteville, N.C., committed to the University of Florida. Nixon (6-6, 263), who is rated the No. 3 offensive tackle in the nation by Rivals.com, picked the Gators over UM, LSU, North Carolina and North Carolina State.

Plantation's Brandon McGee, a solid UM commitment, was the only other South Florida player in the game.

More of South Florida's top talent will be showcased on national television Sunday night during the second annual Under Armour All-American game at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando.

The game, which will be broadcast by ESPN, will feature six South Florida players: Palmetto running back Jaamal Berry (Ohio State commitment), St. Thomas Aquinas wide receiver Duron Carter (Ohio State), Hallandale linebacker/defensive back Ricardo Dixon (South Florida) and athlete Victor Marc (South Florida), Columbus defensive tackle Antwan Lowery (Rutgers) and Gulliver linebacker Frankie Telfort (Uncommitted).

Miami Herald recruiting analyst Larry Blustein and Herald wire services supplemented this report.
