FOOTBALL ROUNDUP

Coconut Creek beats Northeast

Miami Herald Writer

Northeast needed a win to keep its season, but, as has been the case in every tough district game the Hurricanes have played this year, a second-half meltdown proved to be the difference as Coconut Creek edged Northeast 10-7 in a pivotal District 15-5A game Thursday night.

Had the Hurricanes (4-4, 2-3) won, both teams would have been cheering for Dillard in the Soul Bowl next week against Ely as a Dillard victory would have forced a three-way tie for second in the district, forcing a tiebreaker.

Instead, now only the Cougars (5-3, 4-1) will be in the stands rooting on the Panthers as a Dillard win against Ely would make Coconut Creek playoff-bound with a first-round date against St. Thomas Aquinas.

But an Ely win against Dillard wouldn't be the end for Coconut Creek. Instead Dillard, Ely and Creek would have a three-way tie for first, with a tiebreaker determining the top two teams who will make the playoffs.

Creek looked nothing like the team that was drubbed by Dillard just a week ago in a 37-6 loss. Instead, the Cougars played defense with ferocity, attacking Northeast throughout.

The only blemish was a 24-yard touchdown run by Audry Woodson after a fumble by Coconut Creek's Justin Williams, which gave the Hurricanes a 7-3 lead with 5:05 to play in the first half.

However, behind the play of safety Jordan Fowler, the Cougars defense suffocated the Hurricanes as he picked off two passes and scored on a 23-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-4 with 5:15 to play in the third, giving Coconut Creek a 10-7 lead that proved to be the difference.

'[Assistant] coach [Nathaniel] Bell told me before the game, `I need a big-time game from you,' '' Fowler said. ' `It gets crucial, you feel me.' ''

The big touchdown pass was just the beginning of the Cougars second-half domination. Fowler intercepted Woodson on Northeast's next two possessions. He put Coconut Creek in scoring position with both picks, but the Cougars had a field goal blocked and then punted on the other.

But it stopped Northeast's attack, giving up only 78 yards in the second half.

• Coral Springs 34, Fort Lauderdale 0: After getting sidetracked with a disappointing district loss to Douglas last week, Coral Springs took care of business early and bounced back in a nondistrict game.

''The kids showed they could come back, work hard and not mope around after the loss [35-17] last week,'' said coach Ray Gould, whose team played without committing a turnover. ``Last week, we had four turnovers. So this is a big improvement.''

Coral Springs (6-2) jumped all over the Flying L's early, scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions, with John Harris scoring on two 1-yard runs to finish drives of 79 yards (11 plays) and 66 yards (nine plays) on consecutive series to start the game.

Junior Paige scored on a 13-yard run for a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter. In all, the Colts rolled for 254 rushing yards and piled up 20 first downs.

The Colts defense, which sacked Fort Lauderdale quarterback Shane Lewis four times, also got involved in the scoring when Gayron Styles picked off a Fort Lauderdale pass and return it 36 yards untouched for the score and the 27-0 halftime lead.

Lewis completed 3 of 25 passes for 52 yards as Fort Lauderdale dropped to 1-7.

Coral Springs, which will host Deerfield Beach next week, completed the scoring when reserve running back Akeem Barthol broke one for 43 yards late in the fourth quarter.
