Dillard takes off early

Dillard made quick work of Stranahan, scoring 22 points in the first six minutes on the way to its third consecutive victory, 32-0 at Lockhart Stadium on Friday night.

Stranahan's nightmare start began when it fumbled on the first play of the game, setting up a 19-yard touchdown pass from Akeem Parks to Joshua Shannon on Dillard's first play from scrimmage for a 6-0 lead. After forcing a three-and-out, Dillard took possession at its 21-yard line.

Following a holding penalty, sophomore running back Otis Wright went up the middle for an 85-yard touchdown run to give Dillard a 14-0 lead following a two-point conversion run by Shannon.

After another three-and-out, Dillard (4-2) scored on its first play on Trabis Ward's 23-yard touchdown run. Dillard had a 22-0 lead following a two-point run by Ward with 6:25 left in the first quarter.

Ward had another big game for Dillard, but others contributed. Wright provided a huge spark off the bench, rushing nine times for 148 yards and a touchdown.

Ward finished with 122 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns.

''Otis is going to be real good. We've been working and talking to him. He's the future. He's going to be OK,'' Dillard coach Keith Franklin said. ``Trabis had a lot of carries last week. We are just trying to find other weapons in our offense.''

The loss essentially ended Stranahan's chances of making the playoffs Stranahan is 2-4 overall following a 2-0 start and 0-3 in the district.

Stranahan has never been the same after a heartbreaking 7-2 district loss to Ely.

Dillard couldn't make it a running clock because it was hampered by penalties. The Panthers committed six holding penalties in the first half, many of which negated some big runs.

Dillard rushed for 346 yards on 31 carries. Dillard's defense limited Stranahan to 72 yards of total offense.

''This is district play. We got Monarch next week. We can't take anyone lightly,'' Franklin said. ``We are getting there. We are getting better each and every week.''
