EVERGLADES 42, FLANAGAN 6

Everglades' Fortner, Johnson lead rout

Miami Herald Writer

With Miramar and Cypress Bay considered the front-runners, Everglades made sure the District 11-6A race shaped into a three-team race. The undefeated Gators put their first dent in the district standings with a 42-6 victory over host Flanagan on Friday.

Running backs Damian Fortner and Kwamaine Johnson led the Gators (4-0, 1-0) with 284 combined rushing yards and four touchdowns.

''We just wanted to show there is another team in this district, too,'' said Fortner, who finished with 156 yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns. ``We're stepping it up now that it's district time.''

Defense and special teams also factored into the scoring, including two fumble recoveries for touchdowns and a punt return for a touchdown.

''I challenged the players to score in all three phases of the game,'' Everglades coach Josh Shapiro said. ``Except for being a little off in the second quarter, we played well in our first district game, although it didn't feel like a blowout to us.''

Everglades wasted no time getting on the board, taking a 21-0 first-quarter lead over Flanagan (1-4, 0-2).

After a three-and-out defensive series to open the game, Everglades scored on the third play of its first possession when Fortner broke free for a 39-yard touchdown. Michael Chisolm kicked the first of his seven extra points to make it 7-0.

After another three-and-out series by Flanagan, Everglades marched 87 yards in six plays, capped by Fortner's second score on a 46-yard run. By halftime, Fortman had 125 yards on just eight carries as Everglades took a 28-6 halftime lead.

Special teams and defense accounted for the other scores, with Rodney Rumph contributing a 59-yard punt return and cornerback Kendall Gunn scooping up a loose ball and running 2 yards for the touchdown.

In the second half, Johnson scored on the longest play of the game, an 85-yard touchdown run to complete the rout.
