ROUNDUP
Cypress Bay runs through Western 35-3
Cypress Bay (3-0) compiled 303 yards rushing and 16 first downs in the first half as the Lightning rolled past the Wildcats (1-2) 35-3 in front of a crowd of 4,000 at Cypress Bay High School.
The Lightning is ranked third in the Herald's Top 20 South Florida poll and fifth in the state in Class 6A.
And it's doubtful Cypress Bay head coach Mark Guandolo needed any pregame speeches to get his players fired up before kickoff. On Thursday morning, the center of the field had been dug up to spell out the WHS for Western High School.
''To be honest, this is a pretty big rivalry, so the kids were already pretty fired up to begin with,'' Guandolo said. ``They didn't need too much extra motivation, but that sure got their attention.''
And if Cypress Bay was looking to make a statement, they wasted little time -- the offense took the opening kickoff and put together a 13-play, 80-yard drive that ate up the first 7:21 of the game to take a 7-0 lead on a 5-yard touchdown run by Craig Dee.
''The kids really came out and played hard . . . and did what they had to do,'' said Guandolo, who was holding a plaque given to him minutes earlier in recognition of his 200th high school victory.
``What does 200 wins mean? I guess it means I'm getting old.''
