Rigaud powers Pines Charter
Pembroke Pines Charter took advantage of penalties and turnovers and boosted by an 85-yard kick return by senior Jonathan Rigaud defeated cross town rival Flanagan 18-7 to win the city's ``Mayor's Cup".
Trailing 6-0 in the fourth quarter, Flanagan drove into Pembroke Pines territory thanks to a 36-yard pass completion from quarterback Jonathan Rozo to Peter Lutton. It was the third time Flanagan entered the red zone on the night. After squandering two previous opportunities because of a turnover and because of penalties, the Falcons finally reached the endzone when Rozo rambled 18 yards into the endzone. The score was setup by a 14-yard run on the previous play by Rozo who converted on fourth-and-11 to keep the drive alive. John Paul Martinez's P.A.T. gave the Falcons a 7-6 lead with 8:24 remaining in the game.
The momentum and lead Flanagan seized was short lived as on the ensuing kickoff Jaguars returner Rigaud sprinted 85 yards answering the score and giving Pembroke Pines Charter a 12-7 lead with 8:06 remaining. The two-point conversion failed.
''Jonathan Rigaud has been one of our senior leaders all offseason,'' said Pembroke Pines Charter head coach Steve Bruns. ``He really has been a leader for us and its appropriate that he would make a big play to lift us in our opener.''
The Jaguars added another score and put Flanagan away when running back Kenny Philbin took an option pitch and scampered down the sidelines untouched for a 58-yard touchdown run. The P.A.T. was no good and the Jaguars led 18-7 with 4:35 remaining and held on for the victory.
The Jaguars flexbone option offense compiled 232 yards rushing and were led by fullback Brandon Bennett's 97 yards on 23 carries. Flanagan quarterback Rozo scrambled for 168 yards rushing and passed for 58 yards to lead the Falcons
American Heritage 17, Clewiston 0: A summer of preparation paid off for American Heritage as the Patriots shut out Clewiston 17-0 Friday night at Heritage. We worked hard in the weight room all summer and it helped us prepare for Clewiston's speed, said Heritage head coach Byron Walker., whose team finished 11-1 last season. We paid the price.
A balanced running and passing attack enabled Heritage to take a 10-0 half time lead. Following a short Clewiston punt that went out of bounds inside the Clewiston forty, the Patriots, behind the running of Brent Singleton and Daniel Roundtree, drove to the Tiger's one-yard line . With 4:46 in the first quarter, Patriot quarterback Brian Williams scored on a one-yard keeper. David Lopez kicked the extra point. Late in the second, Heritage extended the lead on a 42 yard field goal by David Lopez.
A fumble recovery by Heritage defensive back Jacob Wheeler at the Clewiston 45 midway through the third quarter helped put the game out of reach. Five plays after the recovery, Williams connected with Khald Walker for a 14 yard score. Walker made the diving catch over the middle despite being heavily guarded.
