Garcia, Bonito lead West Broward girls

Break up the Bobcats.

The first-year West Broward girls' volleyball team continued its surprising strong start by knocking off Cooper City 25-13, 25-9, 25-9 on Friday.

Sophomore outside hitter Melanie Garcia had 17 service points, nine aces and nine kills and four digs, and sophomore setter Taylor Bonito added nine assists, eight service points and five aces for the Bobcats (2-0), whose team is composed exclusively of underclassmen.

Bobcats coach Jill Smitherman said victories against Olympic Heights on Wednesday and the Cowboys have raised her expectations.

''I have reset my goals,'' Smitherman said. ``We're looking to go deep in the districts. Before I knew the caliber of our players, I was looking at a .500 season. After the first few weeks, I've set my sights a little higher.''

Emilie Naverette added 11 digs and seven service points.

• Lake Highland Prep d. St. Thomas Aquinas 23-25, 14-25, 25-21, 25-18, 16-14: Kelly Marble had 24 kills, 17 digs, six service points and two blocks to lead the Raiders (1-1).

Stephanie Zielinski had 42 assists, 15 digs, nine blocks and nine kills. Brittany Linder had 14 kills and 12 blocks.

• Westminster Academy d. Kings Academy 25-16, 25-13, 25-15: Freshman star Leigh Andrews had 16 kills, 12 service points, 11 digs and four blocks for the Lions (2-0).

Emily McMurtrey had 12 assists, nine service points and four kills, and MacKenzie Keightley added 10 kills, four blocks and seven service points.

• American Heritage d. Coral Springs Christian 15-25, 26-24, 25-21, 23-25, 15-9: Veronica Rodriguez led the Patriots (1-0) with 18 digs, 13 points, and two aces, and Kari Glasser added 10 kills, eight digs, and three aces.

Alex Martel had 17 assists, 12 points, and 10 digs.

• Flanagan d. Plantation, 25-20, 25-22, 20-25, 16-25, 15-13: Jenna Keeler led the Falcons (1-0) with 18 kills, three digs, two blocks and 27 service points.

Desiree Hardy had 32 assists, five kills, seven digs, two blocks and 21 service points. Amy Avilla had six kills, four digs and 15 service points.

• Calvary Christian d. Somerset 25-11, 25-8, 25-9: Darian Weppner had 10 kills, 13 points and four aces.

Kim Kelly had seven kills, 12 points and four aces.

Kaylee Groeneveld had eight kills and four points for the Eagles (2-0).

• Late Thursday -- Calvary Christian d. Highlands Christian 25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 22-25, 15-5: Darian Weppner had 17 kills, 24 digs.

Kaylee Groeneveld had 17 kills, 10 points and five blocks.

Kim Kelly had 12 kills, 14 points and five aces for the Eagles (1-0).

For the Knights (1-1), Cassie Teuton had six points, 19 digs and 15 assists, and Katelyn Wik had 23 points, 10 aces and seven kills.

• Southwest d. South Miami 23-25, 25-17, 25-13, 25-14: Shannon Ferguson led the Eagles (2-0) with 18 kills, two aces, and eight digs. Hannah Penna added seven kills and six aces. Chrisie Pradus had 50 assists.

• Ronald Reagan d. Archbishop Curley, 25-19, 23-25, 25-20, 25-18: Jacky Prado led the Bison (1-0) with seven kills, three aces, one block and a save. Gaby Godwin had seven kills, seven aces and one save. Adriana Valiente had six kills, two aces and four blocks.

• LaSalle d. Carrollton, 25-15, 25-6, 25-27, 25-21: Rosan Ribera led the Royal Lions (1-1) with eight aces, 13 kills and seven digs. Caro Sinoes had 10 kills and six blocks. Lauren Behar had four aces and 58 assists.

• Ransom Everglades d. Coral Shores, 25-20, 29-27, 25-11: Sammi Wyler led the Raiders (4-0) with eight kills and 15 digs. Viki Collazo added five kills and Jane Kislak had 26 assists, four service aces and five digs.

• Thursday --Sunset d. Braddock 25-16, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23: Lucie Perez led the Knights (1-1) with 19 kills and five digs. Denise Diaz added four aces.
