Armiento, Krohn power McCarthy in football

Miami Herald Writer

Michael Armiento and Camden Krohn were in sync, and the Archbishop McCarthy offense was all but unstoppable Thursday night.

The Mavericks scored five first-half touchdowns -- three on passes from Armiento to Krohn -- on their way to a 42-6 victory against District 14-3A rival Hallandale at Nova.

``We have that chemistry between all the receivers,'' Armiento said. ``[Krohn] just decided to show up tonight.''

McCarthy (9-0, 4-0) finished off its district slate undefeated, and Hallandale (0-10, 0-4) ended its season with the loss.

``We showed teams that we're no joke this year, and we can play,'' Armiento said.

The Mavericks offense started early and did not let up, scoring on five of its six first-half possessions, including a 35-yard connection between Armiento and Krohn on the final play of the half.

The two hooked up for scores of 20 and 2 yards in the first quarter, and running back Juwan King had two touchdown carries of 5 yards each in the second quarter.

That put the Mavericks up 35-0 at halftime, and a running clock started right away in the third quarter. On Senior Night, senior Glenn Gainey added the Mavericks final tally late in the fourth quarter.

Hallandale got on the board in the third quarter when Joel West intercepted a pass and went 38 yards the other way for the score. The Mavericks handled the Chargers without starting running back T.J. Marshall, who sprained his right ankle last week against Fort Lauderdale. Also missing was running back Jamal Dowels, who broke his collarbone against the Flying L's and will likely not see time until the playoffs.

King and company handled the running well in his place, and the team finished with 91 yards on the ground.

Palmer Trinity 42, Posnack 8: Seniors Patrick Kalbac, Eric Torbert and Trae Kerdyk each scored in their final high school football game as Palmer Trinity beat Posnack.

Shut out six times in 2009, the Falcons (2-7) enjoyed an offensive outburst against the Rams (1-5).

Kalbac caught four passes for 106 yards, including a pair of 28-yard touchdowns, and Torbert rushed 13 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Kerdyk capped Palmer's scoring by shifting from his offensive line position to running back and rumbling 13 yards into the end zone.

Posnack's Troy Postal, who scored the Rams' only touchdown, was ejected with 10:50 remaining for making contact with an official.

Chaminade-Madonna 42, Doral Academy 0: Chaminade-Madonna (9-0, 7-0) stayed perfect with the win at Doral Academy (1-7, 1-6).

The Lions jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter as junior quarterback Jerrard Randall turned a third down and a quarterback sneak into a 61-yard touchdown run. Chaminade scoredminutes later on a 27-yard run and capped off a 22-0 first quarter with a 16-yard touchdown pass by Randall.

The Lions added a fourth touchdown early in the second quarter on a 17-yard run by Randall. In the second half, Chaminade ran the ball on most of its plays and would score two more touchdowns in the third quarter.

Stranahan 46, Monarch 19: For a half, Stranahan (7-2) played what coach Joe Redmond would call Madden football, referring to the popular video game, as the Dragons jumped out to a 14-0 lead, but only led 14-7 in the break, having thrown the ball deep on virtually every other player.
