Heritage, Broward stars bring home more state titles

ppelegrin@MiamiHerald.com

Make it four out of the past five state championships for the American Heritage girls' golf team -- and three state titles in a row.

And three Broward golfers won individual titles in a victorious day for the county at the FHSAA Golf Finals.

Heritage's Kyle Roig took home the Class 1A girls' individual title. Cypress Bay's Juliana Herrera captured the Class 2A crown, and Jesse Perkins won the Class 1A boys' title.

The Patriots easily dispatched Northside Christian in the final round of the 1A girls' championship at Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club in Ocala.

Roig defeated Northside Christian's A.J. Newell in a playoff to win the 1A individualtitle.

``I really didn't think I would win this unless I shot like 6- or 8-under,'' Roig said. ``This is great. It's a bonus to go along with our team title.''

Heritage fired a 294 to finish with a 590 and beat Northside Christian by 13 strokes.

``I can't complain,'' said Heritage first-year coach Mike Carlin. ``We went out there with the plan to not leave any shots on the golf course, and I think we accomplished that. A great day.''

Heritage had a two-stroke lead entering Wednesday's final round, but four scores of 75 or lower by the Patriots fueled an easy title.

Roig shot a 1-under 71 to finish with a 142. Shelby Coyle, who led the 1A field after an opening 69, shot a 74 to finish with a 143.

Heritage also got nifty rounds from Katlyn Kennedy 74 (157 total) and Kristen Sammarco 75 (151).

The Archbishop McCarthy boys' team gave eventual 1A champion Benjamin a run for the title but fell short by nine strokes to finish second.

The Mavericks trailed Benjamin by four strokes Tuesday but could not make up the ground.

Perkins didn't have to make up any ground. The Mavericks sophomore was tied with Cardinal Newman's Kevin Jorden after the opening round. But Perkins shot a 1-under 71 in the final round, and Jorden shot a 74.

Herrera, tied for second after the first round in Class 2A, had the score of the day in her field.

The Lightning sophomore shot a 3-under 69 to overtake three other golfers and capture the Class 2A title.

Herrera finished 5-under for the tournament and beat her closest competitors by three strokes.

The St. Thomas Aquinas boys' team could not hold its first-day lead in the Class 2A tournament.

The Raiders fell to eighth place as Lake Mary won the 2A title.
