ROUNDUP

Pompano reaches Class 3A semifinals

jvarsallone@MiamiHerald.com

The rotation of taller middle hitters Lauren Gillespie and Raneisha Lamar was just too much for Boca Raton-St. Andrew's as Pompano defeated the host Scots 25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 27-25 in a Class 3A region quarterfinal Tuesday.

The Tornadoes (14-9) reached their first region semifinal, playing North Broward Prep on Nov. 10 in a rematch of the district final won by the Eagles in a thrilling five games.

Tied at one game apiece Tuesday, Kelsey Cortina served well, and the 6-2 Lamar was strong in the middle with four kills including a block for a kill to give Pompano a 23-19 lead. Lamar then added a kill off a set from Alexis Arenal to extend to a 24-19 lead before winning that Game Three.

In Game Four, St. Andrew's (18-6) rallied to force extra play thanks to Taylor Kennedy (five kills with a tip and six service points with two aces) and Elizabeth Boshart (five kills, three tips and an ace).

Pompano countered with sophomore Peyton Schlosser's three kills (one block), Lamar's five kills (one block) and the 6-0 Gillespie's three kills including the match clincher.

MCCARTNEY HONORED

Miramar wide receiver Ivan McCartney has been named a U.S. Army All-American, becoming the first player from the school to hold that honor.

McCartney will play in the All-American Bowl on January 9 in San Antonio and be honored at a pep rally at Miramar on Monday at 1 p.m.

``He was overwhelmed [when he found out],'' Patriots coach Damon Cogdell said. ``It's well deserved. He's a great kid all around, in the classroom, in the community and on the football field.''

McCartney has 18 catches for 325 yards and four touchdowns this season. The Patriots are the District 10-6A champions and hold a 7-1 record this season heading into Friday night's game against Boyd Anderson, but McCartney wants more from his senior season, Cogdell said.

``We won a district championship already, now the next thing we want is the region championship, and then we want the state championship,'' Cogdell said.

PAHOKEE FORFEITS

Pahokee has forfeited its win against West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman on Sept. 25 forusing an ineligible player, creating some changes in the race for the District 7-2B championship with University playing the Blue Devils Friday at Nova High School at 7 p.m.

University School, Pahokee and North Broward Prep are now tied for first place in the district with 4-1 records. Pahokee beat North Broward Prep earlier this season, and North Broward Prep beat University.

If University wins, it clinches a playoff berth, and the district title if North Broward Prep loses to Coral Springs Charter. Pahokee still clinches the district with a win, but a loss would eliminate them if North Broward Prep wins its game.

University coach Roger Harriott said the forfeit and reshaped district won't impact the way his team plays Friday night. ``It's an unfortunate turn of events for them, but they're a strongenough program to bounce back from that,'' Harriott said. ``We're looking forward to matching up with them on Friday and competing. Whether they forfeit a game or not, ourguys are still going to strap it up and come to play and position ourselves to win.''
