ROUNDUP

Cypress Bay, Aquinas resume golf rivalry

Miami Herald Writer

The Cypress Bay boys' golf team will face its toughest competition at the state tournament Tuesday and Wednesday in Ocala, but the boys already have had plenty of practice.

Coming out of District 21-2A, they have had a season-long rivalry against St. Thomas Aquinas that has helped prepare them for a larger and deeper field in states.

The teams will meet again in Ocala.

``It's really hard to tell [who's better] because the scores are always so close,'' Cypress Bay junior Rohan Ramnath said. ``It's a pretty intense rivalry.''

The Lightning won the district title two weeks ago by five strokes, but the Raiders struck back by taking the Region 7 crown last week by one stroke.

Lightning freshman Michael Heda is new to the teams' competition, but he can already tell it's a passionate one.

``It's my first year, and it's pretty exciting to have such a good rivalry,'' Heda said. ``We go back and forth every time.''

The 2A boys will be playing at Silver Springs Shores, a course Heda said is hillier and has more trees than they're used to in South Florida. But despite that, the team -- in its fourth state tournament since its 2002 inception -- likes its chances.

``We're peaking at the right time,'' Cypress Bay coach Vince Grossi said. ``Everything we've done has been preparation for this.''

West Broward's Justin Yocum also qualified for the 2A state tournament as an individual.

The Archbishop McCarthy boys' team qualified for the 1A tournament, as did Andrew Wong of Pompano Beach and Andrew Mangini of Coral Springs Christian.

On the girls' side, Cypress Bay will take part in the 2A tournament along with Jessica and Jennifer Sirianni of West Broward and Victoria Trapani from Aquinas.

The 1A girls from Broward include two-time defending state champion American Heritage, Cardinal Gibbons and Westminster Academy's Ashley Malinchak.
