Weaver powers BA to victory; N. Broward wins

Craig Weaver ran for 154 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown run, to lead Boyd Anderson past host Douglas 41-27 on Friday night.

Dane James threw for 139 yards and two touchdowns and also scored on a 3-yard run to help lead the Cobras (5-3).

Orville Reynolds ran 31 times for 183 yards and three touchdowns for the Eagles (2-6).

Trailing 21-20 early in the third quarter, Courtney Bynes caught a short pass that he turned into a 55-yard touchdown, and Darius Dukes added a two-point run as Boyd Anderson never trailed again.

North Broward 45, Cardinal Newman 7: Ethan Grant rushed for 139 yards, including touchdown runs of 12 and 75 yards and showed off his receiving skills by hauling in a 78-yard pass as the Eagles (6-2) rolled at home.

Brandon Doughty finished 8 of 17 for 225 yards with his other two scoring passes going to Vladimir Rock, who finished with 83 yards.

The Eagles used their high-powered offense to build a commanding 38-0 halftime lead before Cardinal Newman scored their lone touchdown in the third quarter.

Melbourne Central Catholic 53, Calvary Christian 29: Quarterback Michael Erdman ran for 101 yards and one score, and passed for 272 more yards and three touchdowns as Melbourne picked up the victory against host Cavalry Christian.

Trailing 29-22 at the start of the third quarter, Calvary (6-2) tied it on a 65-yard touchdown pass from Javan Shashaty to Kyle Whitley. Central (8-0) then scored 24 unanswered points, including a 50-yard punt return for a TD by J.T. Washington to give Melbourne a 9-point lead, 38-29.

Shashaty was 21 of 37 for 277 yards and four touchdowns. Whitley had seven receptions for 113 yards and a TD, and Dominick Pierre rushed for 130 yards and also caught a touchdown pass.

Calvary took the opening kickoff and needed just three plays to score, with Pierre running 45 yards to set up Shawn Lashbrook's 10-yard touchdown catch from Shashaty.

After the Eagles defense stopped Melbourne on fourth down at the Calvary 5-yard line, the Eagles drove 95 yards on eight plays and a penalty.

With Greg Mabin catching a 32-yard touchdown pass from Shashaty.

Trailing 15-7 Melbourne Rayshawn Scott intercepted a pass deep in Central's territory, which started the game tying drive.

Central used its height advantage in the passing game to outscore Calvary 22-7 in the second quarter.

Barringon Christian 56, Berean Christian 0: The football program is in its rookie season, but the Falcons picked up a blowout victory at Bel Aire Park.

Barrington fields a small team, just 24 players deep, but the Falcons had several players contribute in the victory. Six different players scored in a game played with the running clock.

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL

Four years after Terri Jimenez took over a sub-.500 program, North Broward will have its first district banner to hang next season.

The Eagles dropped their first match but rallied to take three of their next four and beat host Pompano Beach 23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 24-26, 15-4 in the District 14-3A championship game.

Victoria McPherson had 26 kills, 15 service points, and Katelyn Hummel had 54 assists, 15 service points and five aces for the Eagles. Krista Lighter added 28 digs, 12 points and five aces.

After the game, Jimenez took her team bowling as a reward for securing a home date against Cardinal Newman in the 3A Region quarterfinals Tuesday.
